A beautifully colored amber ale, Roland’s is loyal to the line of Extra Special Bitters from which it takes its pedigree. The effervescent head releases the spicy aroma and flavor of Cascade hops that accompany the the big malty sweetness of Crystal malt and Roasted barley. The result is a complex medium-bodied beer with a champion flavor reminiscent of cinnamon and caramel. This is a stud of a brew perfect for sharing one or two or three or four with old friends.

Draft. Pours a dark golden/amber color. Caramel malt aroma with floral hops. Taste was very sweet. Nice smooth medium body, finishes more spicy from the cinnamon. Pretty good overall.

Pours a clear light amber body with a small wispy beige head. The nose is dry and toasty malt with a light hint of floral hops. The flavor is pretty to style, dry and toasty, on the drier side, with light bitterness. Some lingering leafy hops. Light bodied with soft light carbonation. Decent effort. 3/7/7/3/13

Had a nice earthy maltiness to it with a touch of caramel and hops, but nothing that stood out overall.

Draft to taster at the Coxe Ave ABC. Looks solid; a transparent copperish caramel with white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells malty with notes of caramel and bitter and piney hops. Tastes like it smells, but more robust, with a medium to medium full-bodied mouthfeel. A solid sample of the style.

Keg @ the brewpub. Medium Amber with a small creamy head. Toffee and toasted nuts. Toasted brown bread. Sweet caramel dipped Apple flavor with a pretty sugary finish. Approaching being cloying. Light bpdy, soft carb. Heavy handed.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2014 Pours a clear, slightly reddish amber with a nice buff head that leaves some good lacing. Malty aroma is not much. Flavor, fortunately, is much better, malty with hints of caramel and woody hops. Texture is not firm but lively. Not great, but give it a bark.

This beer was just pretty meh. I was hoping for more, but there was nothing to distinguish this beer - hops/malt balance was fine, but I had no desire to ever have this again as there was nothing in the beer to say "drink more of me."

From tap. Pours deep amber in color with little head. Aroma was mild with a sweet caramel note. Taste was caramel and bitter op bite. Balanced.

Shag (3045) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - AUG 30, 2012
A dark amber color with a white head. Aroma contains some caramel and dark fruit. Flavor is rather malty with some caramel, cherries, toffee. Aftertaste is a bit sweet. Overall a nice one.

Draft sampler at Asheville Brewing’s Merrimon Avenue Location. Dark amber color, smalll white head that left little lacing, subdued malty aroma, nice malty flavor but I wouldn’t classigy this as an ESB. It’s perfectly acceptable as an amber ale. Tasted on July 7, 2012.
