3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from tap. Pours a medium gold color with a foamy head.
Very aromatic with aromas of mangoes, florals, resin and hops. Nice depth with the florals being the most noticeable.
Medium bodied, but it’s all on the attack as the mid is thinner and the finish is pretty clipped. The notes of resin, florals and hops are all very nice on the attack, but it drops off from there.
I like the smells a lot. Too bad it dropped off on the feel, but the initial attack had real good flavors.
Sampler pour on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). My first stop in saw 10 drafts. This was one. Pours a richer amber copper blend, healthy glow with a touch of haze. A bit dulled in color overall, frothy offwhite head sits atop, laces ok overall. Aromas are nice bitterness, citrusy and earthy. Florals, white grape, lemons and grapefruit. Firmly hopped but not overdone. Some crystal malt sweetness, touch of biscuit and bread. Not the most potent nose, but it’ll do. Initial is pleasant, richer Galaxy hop presence provides a coolness, earthy florals, weeds, and grass. Touches of white grape, mint sprigs, and grapefruit, bit of lemon. Earthy ric bitterness. Touches of bready and biscuty malts, but more dry and hop dominant up front. Middle shows touches of citrus and melon, white grape, some bready and biscuity malts, more tame. The hops are strong, potent even through the middle on this one. Almost dry, menthol like. Backend shows touches of sweetness, fruit, richer bitter cool and dry finish of florals, grass, white grape, and grapefruit. I quite enjoyed this, has a cool herbal element that lingers into the backend through all the fruit. Malts don’t get in the way, don’t show up much at all aside from a touch of body for me. Quality offering from Atlas here. hombrepalo (1971) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 7, 2012
On tap at CBF. Top beer of the Not that good event. This beer rocks. smells like earthy pine all over the place, with a touch of tropical citrus and grass. a bit saline in the thickness of the body. generally like my beers a little more dry than this, but IIPA is what it is. damn good, and tons of earth! Draft at Atlas. Unfortunately, pours a very deep amber with a sticky white head. Nose is deep tropical fruit, distinctly Galaxy with some faint catty notes. Quite clean in the nose. On tasting, the bitterness seems higher than advertised. Some light caramel initially. The catty hops blend into some passionfruit. More bitterness. The caramel grows and throws this off. Pretty solid old school IPA, but I’d rather it be dry and pale. The bitterness is far too aggressive, I’d rein back the early bittering additions. The crystal malt also ruins it for me. 4 oz. taster at Atlas. Okay, my first time with a Galaxy hop beer. Comes with a coppery IPA color, a thin scrum of foam. A nice smell of citrusy hops, but nothing out of the ordinary. But when I sip it, ah! A big tropical fruit note that I cannot identify. The descriptions for this hop elsewhere suggest passionfruit, and since I’ve never had that, I’ll go along. A little juicy like a muskmelon, but still with a citrus tang. First sample from Atlas that left a noticeable layer of lace, and it’s all around the glass. Still plenty of bitterness and resin to the hop as well. Quite fruity by the end, and the alcohol becomes more assertive as I drink further.

Draft in their taproom. Pours lighter amber. Very dry and hoppy, super good floral and citrus flavor tho. And solid ipa
