Taster at Atlas. Brown malt color, dense in the middle, a thin layer of foam. Lightly malty smell, more of a roasty stout nose than a malty barley wine. Taste has a strong malt backbone with a bit of hop support; bitterness is delivered well by prickly bubbles.
On tap, poured into a snifter. Warm roasty notes of caramel, wood, and plum come through, along with a touch of alcohol. It pours a murky, muddy mahogany color with and off-white, soapy head that retains a medium ring and a wispy surface with just a light lace. The taste is a medium high sweet and medium bitter. It’s a viscous, full bodied beer with a fuzzy carbonation. Flavors of caramel, plum, and roasted nuts come through, blanketed by a woody, alcohol warmth and spice finish. It’s clean and relatively dry for a barleywine with just a touch of toffee in the aftertaste. nuplastikk (6514) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 9, 2014
Tap at Atlas. Unfiltered amber-brown body. Thin, standard off-white head. The aroma is a little subdued for a BW, some red fruit tinges. Fruity UK BW I guess, could have been called an Imperial Amber and I wouldn’t have second guessed it. Nice fruity notes, not overbearing. Pretty standard and forgettable. Not bad, just a little tame and lame for 2014. Nice vanilla amber malt fruity depth. kaser (6430) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 11, 2013
Draft at atlas. Hate barleywines and this was no exception. Pours dark orange almost amber. Thin white head. Super sweet plum taste. Tart too? Dunno. Yuck novels (424) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 30, 2013
Nice little sipper. Aroma is full of spices and booze, has a clean but warm finish. Great option at Atlas.
