Cherry Stout is a blend of 6 malts combined with Montmorency Cherry concentrate from our home state of Michigan. A full and dark outing, it features the complexity common to the American style stout with the tartness, not sweetness, of Michigan cherries. The blend of fully fermented fruit and toasted, nutty malt characters bring forth an elusive cherry wood aroma to the finish.

Bottle. What is it with this brewery? This is the second bottle from Atwater that I have tried to drink and the second bottle that exploded with foam and then tasted like sour, carbonated liquid badness. From what I tasted this beer has very little body and way too much carbonation. No malts to speak of. I need to give this brewery a fair shake, but right now I’m a little put out.

From tap.

Light brown. Slight haze. The aroma shows a fair bit of pedio with maybe some roast notes. Tart, some cherryish notes. Watery towards the finish. Light roast. This one is too tart and the stank aroma is not cool at all.

Draught, 5.9% as Atwater Cherry Porter. Malty aroma, not that roasted, but slightly fruity. Almost black colour, seems hazy. Looks like prune juice when the glass is almost empty. Almost no head. The flavour has a good cherry, raisin and cinnamon combination. There is a little tartness from the cherries, like good sour ones. The cherry is a little fat and vulgar, but that works well with the oxidised note.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours black with a frothy 4 finger tan head. Aroma of tart cherry. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is tart cherry and some smooth burnt malt. There’s coffee as the cherry goes away. The whole is more tart than anything. It’s certainly interesting. Finally seems to finish a little chocolate cherry.

Tmoney99 (14479) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 7, 2009
Bottle from Party Source. Poured reddish black color with an average off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate cherry roasted malt a/roma. Medium tart cherry malt and coffee flavor and tart cherry finish of moderate duration. Good drinkable SWEET STOUT.

argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 12, 2010
12oz bottle. Small tan head that mostly disappears atop brown-black body. Aroma is moderately sweet, roast/coffee, some cherry, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, cherry, some milk chocolate, vegetal, light roast. Light-medium body, some stickiness.

deyholla (11602) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUL 28, 2009
On tap at MBG Summer Festival. Poured black with a brown head. Dark chocolate notes with an under tone of cherry. Flavor consisted of dark notes and cherry notes but they combated each other rather than mixing well.

Bottle. Dark pour with an off white head. Aroma is sour, but not like sour cherries. An odd lactic sourness that didnt seem right. I did get a few hints of cherries but I couldn’t get by the weird sourness. And the odd sour funk carried through to the nose. Not really good at all. Too bad.
