COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark and complex, this strong ale was brewed to wine strength using copious amounts of malt and hops. Aging for several months has mellowed this "old prospector" into a smooth and rich ale, perfect for sipping on a cold winters night. Dark crystal malts lend a toasted malt sweetness with flavors of raisins and plums, while Magnum and Cascade hops balance this full bodied malt brew with a clean bitterness and hop aroma.

Pours half a finger of head on a dark brown body. The aroma is musty wood with grapes... and a touch of lemon. The taste is dark, boozy with strong bitterness, molasses, wine notes and a dry wood finish. The texture is smooth and soft with low carbonation. Fairly nice. This was a 2013 bottle, which will probably smooth out with age.

Oneof the nice wine barrel aged beers we have had. Pours a beautiful deep red with a grey head. Smells of white wine and buttery biscuits. Taste starts out with wine and a bit of bitterness, then some pepper, caramel and vanilla. Had in the bottle.

22oz bottle, big thanks to DanielCoor for sharing. Written on the bottle is 2013, and the label indicates that its Zin barrel-aged. Perfect, considering the only glasses we have on hand are wine glasses. Clear red brown color. Thin off-white ring of head. Couple loose dots of lace. Nice vanilla, light spiciness, wood, dark fruit. Earthy hop. Moderate bitter taste, light warmth and mild bite in the finish, light to moderate sweet. Hint of oxidiziation? Maybe its tannins. Not bad. Pretty nice, mildly boozy.

"Id yet to see the regular barley wine in bottles so imagine my surprise when we spotted a wine barrel aged bottle at a Roseville, ca Whole Foods. Pours pretty dark, aroma and flavor fruity with heavy oak, pepper, and a real nice balance with the base beer. Slightly astringent with a tart finish. Just the right amount of sweetness with a pronounced vinous quality. One of their best!"

@Stordirren 14-8-13: ganska trevlig doft. Mycket frukt, malt och alkohol. Tyvrr frsvinner mycket i smaken. Ganska spritig och med tydlig malt. Ganska torr munknsla med mycket fat. Allt fr obalanserad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone ---- Soberness not garanteed!

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pours dark copper. Nose big barleywine caramel malt, toffee, light wood, would almost guess bourbon barrel if blind tasting. The wine comes through in the initial taste, then the big malt profile. Toffee, raisin, then dank hop. Malty then high bitter finish.

22 oz waxed bottle from City Beer San Francisco shared with drsordr. Pours a dark amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel, toasted bready malts, vanilla, the Zin barrel adds vinous character and wood, a slight tart character, fairly strange and I spent too much for it, but its another big beer.

2012 Version Appearance: Dark brown with beige head Aroma: Raisins and Bread. After a while Im picking up some vanilla and barrel aging Taste: Malty and syrupy with toffee, vanilla, cocoa nibs with a chewy pruny finish. Overall: It took some time and warmth from the initial pour for the complexity to develop. The barrel aging notes are very subtle. Nothing terribly unique in the taste but a easy drinking barley wine.

I am going to vote no on basically every wine-barrel aged beer that isnt a sour for the next few months. Weird grapey sweetness mixed with barleywine sweet malt character and a bit astringent. Blah.
