3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours half a finger of head on a dark brown body.
The aroma is musty wood with grapes... and a touch of lemon.
The taste is dark, boozy with strong bitterness, molasses, wine notes and a dry wood finish.
The texture is smooth and soft with low carbonation.
Fairly nice. This was a 2013 bottle, which will probably smooth out with age.
2014 bottle. The beer pours a clear dark amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Small patches of lace. Aroma of oak, dark fruit, malt and yeast. Full-bodied with flavors of vinous oak, caramel malt, mild hops and yeast. The finish is oaky wine and malt. Pretty good overall. Aromas of molasses, toffee, raisins, prunes, deep malts, grapes, subtle chocolate, barley, and herbs. Appears a dark crimson with heavy lacing. Taste is toffee, red grapes, prominent wine, molasses, barley, roasted malt, prunes, raisins, dates and deep malts. Overall, very interesting. The combination of barley wine and wine is really impressive. monk191 (2022) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 14, 2015
Oneof the nice wine barrel aged beers we have had. Pours a beautiful deep red with a grey head. Smells of white wine and buttery biscuits. Taste starts out with wine and a bit of bitterness, then some pepper, caramel and vanilla. Had in the bottle. AmEricanbrew (7080) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - JAN 2, 2015

22oz bottle, big thanks to DanielCoor for sharing. Written on the bottle is 2013, and the label indicates that it’s Zin barrel-aged. Perfect, considering the only glasses we have on hand are wine glasses. Clear red brown color. Thin off-white ring of head. Couple loose dots of lace. Nice vanilla, light spiciness, wood, dark fruit. Earthy hop. Moderate bitter taste, light warmth and mild bite in the finish, light to moderate sweet. Hint of oxidiziation? Maybe it’s tannins. Not bad. Pretty nice, mildly boozy. slowrunner77 (13206) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 18, 2014
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2017 I’d yet to see the regular barley wine in bottles so imagine my surprise when we spotted a wine barrel aged bottle at a Roseville, ca Whole Foods. Pours pretty dark, aroma and flavor fruity with heavy oak, pepper, and a real nice balance with the base beer. Slightly astringent with a tart finish. Just the right amount of sweetness with a pronounced vinous quality. One of their best!" SirLimpsalot (4705) - SWEDEN - AUG 13, 2014
@Stordirren 14-8-13: ganska trevlig doft. Mycket frukt, malt och alkohol. Tyvärr försvinner mycket i smaken. Ganska spritig och med tydlig malt. Ganska torr munkänsla med mycket fat. Allt för obalanserad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone ---- Soberness not garanteed! drsordr (2927) - Loveland, Ohio, USA - JUN 25, 2014
Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pours dark copper. Nose big barleywine caramel malt, toffee, light wood, would almost guess bourbon barrel if blind tasting. The wine comes through in the initial taste, then the big malt profile. Toffee, raisin, then dank hop. Malty then high bitter finish. alexsdad06 (11224) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - JUN 22, 2014
22 oz waxed bottle from City Beer San Francisco shared with drsordr. Pours a dark amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel, toasted bready malts, vanilla, the Zin barrel adds vinous character and wood, a slight tart character, fairly strange and I spent too much for it, but it’s another big beer.
