Bottle: Unfiltered
Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

AleRider78 (1501) - Winchester, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 10, 2017
Pours a fairly thick foamy white head that leaves some dirty lacing. Has a slightly hazy orange appearance. Citrus and floral hop aromas, mainly oranges and mandarins. Has flavours of Belgian yeast, oranges, some sweet malts and spices in the finish. Excessive carbonation, prickly and tingling sensation. Medium bodied. Pretty good overall, nothing sensational for a Belgian brew.

Hodně dobré belgické pivo, jedno z těch mých oblíbených. Skvělá svěží chuť, příjemné nasládlé aroma a jemná pěna.

33cl bottle. many times during the early beer ages.
Pours hazy dark godl with frothy white head, Long head retention, some good lacing. Yeasty, herbal nose.Medium body, high carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is malt forward, alcohol noticed, yeasty, belgina profiled. Classic one, a bit above than average.

Bottle from Waitrose, as St Stefanus, served in tulip glass. Cellar release May 2017. A genuine abbey beer. Towering white head from secondary bottle fermentation. Distinctive Belgium yeasty taste intensified by swirling last bottle contents with yeast sediment into glass. Taste delivers a satisfying hop bitterness with plenty of clove-like phenolics, sweet honey and dark marmalade making up the long finish. An excellent beer but must try and keep one of these for further tasting after a 12 month ageing to see whether the Brett shines through.

Ik heb de alias St Stefanus gedronken in zuid Frankrijk, was wat te koud en kwam vrij chemisch over, toen hij wat warmer werd verdween dat. Niet erg onderscheidend biertje, moutig en niet bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle as Augustijn, from la buvette à bières. I like this, it’s refined, extremely well balanced, i can feel the weigth of tradition in this beer.
