Bottle: Unfiltered
Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.
Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.
Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

330ml bottle. Hazy golden-amber body, good fluffy white head with decent retention. Aroma of Belgian yeast, herbal hops, lemon sourness, spices. Taste is yeasty, herbal hops bitterness, again some lemon, spice, cereals, a late alcohol aftertaste. Medium body, a little too well carbonated to my taste.

Bottle @Wetherspoons Clifton, Bristol. Huge white head, golden colour, lightly hazy. Aroma: banana, nails, bit of malts. Lightly sour taste with sweet banana aftertaste. Full body, lively. Not bad, however strong aroma of nails.

St Stefanus bottle (3 months) from Waitrose, Shepherds Bush. Fantastic fruity aroma. Golden yellow body with big white head. Well balanced flavours of sweet fruitiness and yeast and great aftertaste.

Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into trappist glass. Appearance: Hazy yellow colour. Small but steady head with “spring” in the centar. Aroma: Yeast, malt, banana. Palate: Light body, medium to high carbonation. Taste: Yeast, wheat, sweet, hint of alcohol, moderate bitter aftertaste. Overall impression: Very enjoyable, usual Belgian representative.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 0.33l. 7% ABV. Slightly hazy copper pour with one finger creamy white head. Good retention, nice lacing. Nose is mostly yeasty with some grainy notes to it. Subtle hops. Thin to medium body with average texture. Quite strong on the carbonation. Boozy and bitter taste. A bit unrefined, rough on the edges. Aroma of malts, grains, yeast. Vegetable-like notes. Slightly metallic. Pretty straightforward, lacking in complexity. A bit boozy mouthfeel. Dry and bitter finish. Overall, quite average and generic. A bit disappointed with this one.

Slightly darker than golden with a bit of haziness. Big creamy white head, good retention and nice lacing. Smell has fresh fruitiness (expecially orange, peach) and peppery spiciness. Taste has honey, a bit of a sugary feel, strong fruitiness (orange, peach), slight spiciness. The abv may not be that high but a bit of alcoholic warmth is still to be felt. Overall it’s a dominantly sweet beer but somehow it does not feel at all over the top. Tastewise it’s definitely a vivid/intense beer, though maybe a bit unrefined. Medium bodied with high carbonation, quite mouthfilling and slightly creamy. Overall a pretty enjoyable beer.

Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a finger of white head and medium to high carbonation. Aroma has plenty of spice, with clove, coriander, ripe banana, dried fruit and bready malts. Taste is sweet, sticky, with some sour bitterness coming through in a nice length complex finish. Would be interesting to try and older one of these.
