COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
If a stout and a pilsner had a lovechild, it would be Black Thunder. It would also be a miracle, because beer can’t “get it on.” This miniature powder keg starts with a roasted, bread-like complexity but finishes dry and clean like a pilsner. It’s dark, distinctive, and dry.
Hops: German Magnum, Tettnanger, Saaz, Hallertau
Malts: Pils, C-60, Chocolate Wheat, Debittered Black
Yeast: Urquell Lager

Wordsworth (166) - Austin, Texas, USA - JAN 19, 2013
UPDATED: APR 28, 2013 Draft poured. Dark almost black with practically no head. Hard to tell the aroma in this glass. Flavors are light roast, chocolate, malt, easy hops on the finish. Goes down smooth and tasty but not remarkable

12oz can. Medium beige head atop crystal clear dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, chococaramel, some grassy. Taste is moderately sweet, roast, chocolate, some earthy/grapefruit/grassy, caramel, light bread, faint cherry. Light-medium body, some creaminess, light stickiness.

Pours dark brown with a beige head that soon fades to wispy lacing. Hints of dank torf, caramel and chocolate in an aroma that altogether was rather on the weak side. In fairness, the slightly too cold serving temperature may have dulled the olfactory delights.Taste is characterized by roasted notes, light caramel and chocolate, and the flat, bitter notes from the pils malt, but yet still not a lot of depth. Body stays rather light with moderate carbonation. Not bad, but it feels literally like a mix of two brews.

Appearance: Opaque brown black. Full inch of off white medium bubbles. Nose: malt forward with a very deeply roasted malt presence. Bit of earth and smoke. Taste: Deeply roasted malt. Notes of nuts, burnt resin, chocolate and coffee Body: medium to thinner. Parting thoughts: a very tasty schwarzbier. Good overall flavor profile and blend of tastes

Aroma: malty and roasty with some hops in the background; Appearance: extremely dark ruby red with fluffy, off white head that dissipates slowly; some lacing; Taste: combination of lager and stout tastes odd to me; not my thing; some chocolate notes; Palate: long and chocolatey finish with a medium body; Overall: I can appreciate it but don’t really care for it. Would not buy again.

12 oz. can. Pours a dark cola brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt with a bit of smokiness. Taste is roasted malt, nuts, a touch of smoke, hints of chocolate, and coffee. Has a pleasant lingering finish of mildly bitter roasted malt. Medium-bodied but on the lighter side of the spectrum. Nice one.

12oz beer. Walnut color, clear-ish, with light lacing, and a small off-white head. Pretty nice aroma, chocolate malts dominate. Taste is as advertised, not overpowering, pretty good schwartz! Traditional, with a kick. Nice medium mouthfeel/palate, with a light lingering bitterness. Recommended!

Rated based on notes taken 23 May 2012 -- A well made schwartzbier. A tad bit on the light side. Needs just a little bit more stuff to it. But it’ll drink just fine.
