3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of caramel cookies and tad bit of hops. Very hazy amber appearance with an active and lacy head. Flavors of caramel, bread, hops, gingersnaps, and lemon. Starts out very smooth and sweet and then finishes very dry-boozy with a pronounced bitterness from the dry-hopping. Very unique beer. It really does tend to change in taste and flavor throughout a full sip.
Pours a murky copper, frothy ivory head. Aroma is dark ripened fruits, plum, raisin, some woodiness and honey. Very full and complex on the tongue, lots going on... Wood, toffee, caramel, cherry, plum, celery, slight booziness.... Very aggressive yet successful because of the balance of it all. Perfect bitterness. Well done Avery! Bomber - nose is resin and spruce tips. Sip adds hay, straw, and bread or crackers. Hint of mint. Balanced I guess. Perplexed by this, sort of like the last Presidential election. Sorry for getting political. jb (3250) - Rochester, New York, USA - JUN 24, 2017
Clear attractive orange-burnt sienna. Spotty lacing. Big nice nose of some sort of cookies with toffee. Thick mouthfeel, , and in the mouth this goes through several quick transitions. Thick, tingly, sweet, hoppy, dry, left with residual sweetness, still not too much. Well done. Trade from Ron. Fujimo2000 (166) - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA - JUN 9, 2017
Pours a beautiful crisp copper as bright as a Lincoln penny. A lasting orange Trump lacing with a crisp finish. Superb brew. J_man (996) - Tustin, California, USA - MAY 2, 2017
Raisins, prunes and dark caramel aromas from a slightly hazy amber/orange body with a very fluffy and persistent white head. The flavor seems more tame with some raisin component along with dark cherries and woody, dry bitterness. A nice honey/caramel sweetness balances this bitterness out nicely. The alcohol is apparent and appropriate. The overall effect is very balanced but almost seems tight in that it doesn’t seem to deviate much through the sip. That’s not a bad thing because it’s delicious and it makes this more like a traditional European strong ale. Or maybe I waited too long to drink it and it’s mellowed out. In any case, it finishes with a lasting caramel sweetness and dry woody aftertaste. I wish this was released more often than every 4 years, but now I’ve got something to look forward to in 2020!

Big malt and big hops - that generally sums up Ale to the Chief. It pours amber/dark orange. It’s hazy and has an off-white layer of foam. Dank pine needle aroma and wet fallen leaf aromas. Flavor is similar to many beers that bear the American Strong Ale designation. Caramel malts at the start. Happily that caramel note is clear but not overly sweet. The same can be said for the hop profile; the hops are assertive but not so bitter as to be a bracing, stark contrast to the fat malts. They have floral, piney, leafy, zesty, and tea-like qualities. As a whole, you could call the Cascade influence "earthy." Again, that would sum things up quite nicely. Finhead (1757) - OFallon, Illinois, USA - MAR 25, 2017
A clear, deep reddish-gold pour with a frothy white head with excellent lacing. The aroma has spicy hops with a malty backbone. It has a medium body with slick texture with average carbonation. The taste bittersweet with a slightly bitter finish and alcohol warmth. chadski (140) - California, USA - JAN 8, 2017
This is really good. Nice balance of honey sweetness and piney hop bitterness. Can’t wait to get it again in another four years. hershiser2 (3206) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JAN 8, 2017

Amber color. Thin,off-white head. Aroma of malt, honey and pine. Sweet malt dominates in taste.Full and "heavy" body. Hoppy bitterness at the end compensates sweetness a little bit. Good beer, but too sweet for me.
