Mild aroma. Pours dark with a light head. Very creamy texture with a slightly roasty flavor headed by the slightly bitter flavor of rye. Very well adjusted and one of my favorites of the day. BeerandBlues2 (13323) - Escondido, California, USA - SEP 19, 2010

Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee, toasted), light hops (woody), average esters (fruity), with notes of raisins, plum, and spicy rye. Medium body, warmth, carbonation, and creaminess; medium dry finish. notalush (5878) - Denver, Colorado, USA - SEP 25, 2010
Pint at Avery - pours a dark ruby/brown, with a soapy tan head - medium bodied and fairly creamy - mostly dry, with a bit of roast and dry cocoa character - what little sweetness there is brings with it flavors of raisin - tangy rye character is complimented by the hefe yeast, which also adds a light banana quality to the flavor - a bit of pumpernickel and light smokiness - overall, a great, sessionable rye beer - nice. Dark amber in color, clear with a thin head. Nice spice aroma with a good malt backing. Wonderful flavors and a great finish this was a strong beer.
On tap at Avery. Opaque black-brown with a rusty beige head. Creamy and rich, with an odd berry-chocolate sourness in the finish. Nutty, lots of sweet malty tones. Roasty, somewhere between a Dunkel and a Schwarzbier, with the gingerbread tones of a Rye. Pretty nice.

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2016 Tap at brewery. Very dark brown with a moderate tan head. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, rye, and earth. Taste is roast, and smoky chocolate, with most of rye in the finish. Medium bodied and creamy. potbeerjob (1343) - Denver, Colorado, USA - OCT 17, 2010
Draught at Avery. Black with nice tan head. Lots of roasted coffee in aroma, hints of chocolate malt. Big roasty taste, but very drinkable almost light bodied. Pretty good. thirdeye11 (6160) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JAN 4, 2011
(Draught at Avery - GABF) near black with a tan head. Nose of smoke, sweet toasty and nutty sugars, milky aromas as well. Taste of raisin, smoky chocolate malt, roasty tobacco and cola root. Oily slick body, medium thick, creamy but a bit too smoky for my taste. Beergeek23322 (2602) - Chester, Virginia, USA - NOV 18, 2013
