COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

12oz serving. Batch 6 poured into a snifter. A - Pours an evil black with a 1 finger espresso head that leaves sticky patches of lacing. S - Bold chocolate and espresso, robust roasted malts, boozy vanilla vapors, caramelized sugar. T - Intense roasted bittersweet chocolate, cocoa dusted dates and raisins, woody hop bitterness, toasted brown sugar, anise seeds, warming alcohol and espresso on the finish. Hints of bacon come out as it warms. M - Full body, a bit syrupy, low to medium carbonation. Intense sweet flavors that are balanced by a robust roast character and hints of bitterness. Very complex malt and dark fruit flavors. Serving type: bottle 10-23-2011

Near black pour with tan almost brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, molasses and alchohol. Taste follows nose, but adds a lot of bitterness. Very good, just would like to drop the bitterness alittle.

Black with some brown head. Nose is first a big whiff of alcohol. Getting past that I pick up lots of roasted malt, some brown sugar and maybe maple. Perhaps just a hint of plum. Really big nose. Taste is equally bold. Taste has a lot of molasses blending plum, fig, and raisin. Lastly there is the chocolate that youd expect. Medium bodied, almost creamy. Really nice, big and bold.

Bottle. Black with a big light brown head and moderate lacing. Alcohol, belgian yeast, chocolate covered cherries, clay, wood and clove. Tastes like a brownie mixed with a belgian beer and rum. Heavy body with a chalky feel.

Batch No. 12, 2016. ABV: 14.6%. Pours a thick, dark black, with good-sized, lasting, off white head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, anise. Flavor has quite a boozy touch to it, along with chocolate, anise/licorice, and coffee. Not bad at all.

Pours black with a nice brown head and lacing. For 17% beer the head and lacing retention is outstanding! A really good looking beer. Aroma of coffee and dark chocolate, surprisingly no alcohol. Up front is coffee and dark chocolate followed by an after taste of licorice and rum. Not boozy at all. This is a very good beer!

ElCapitan22 (350) - Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 13, 2016
Pours jet black in color and somehow, despite its ABV, holds both its head and has excellent lacing. It carries an aroma of dark chocolate and burnt coffee, however the taste is entirely different and more complex. This tastes like a glorious chocolatey stout, but has undertones of cherry and anise. It is very drinkable for its alcohol content and still finishes with a hint of rum. A must have for the winter season!

Pours black, minimal tan head, good lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and molasses. This has great flavors, coffee, dark fruits, chocolate and caramel. This is not nearly as thick as expected and is surprisingly easy to drink, the alcohol is well hidden. Bottle dated October 2015 batch #11. This is awesome stuff.

Draught at the Avery Brewing Co, Boulder, CO. 2015 vintage. Dark reddish brown color with a tiny tan head. Roasted malt, vanilla, fudge, mild vinegar, strong hops, mild bitterness, sweetness and mild alcohol in the aroma. Really complex. The flavor is... amazing. Alcohol, roasted malt, licorice, dryness, mild vinegar and strong hops. Really complex. Warms like hell. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
