Very dark brown in color. Hoppy chocalate aroma. Really yummy.. Malty flavor. Smooth palate. Very interesting. IlanMan (1015) - Appleton, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 9, 2008
This was just terrific. Very complex aroma of barley, chocolate, and raisins. I felt that there was a stronger taste of either raisins and/or prunes mixed with light chocolate and grain. Real tastey beer that I would for sure look for again. BeerFanDan17 (1121) - Brunswick, Maine, USA - MAY 13, 2008
One of my favorite porters. Pours rich black and is surprised to have a touch of hoppiness to counter the malt and sweetness. Still, flavors are that of coffee and roasted chocolate. Delicious. MarcLager (19) - SWEDEN - AUG 18, 2010
Even for someone with as unsophisticated taste buds and sense of smell as I, it’s easy to make out the chocolate and coffee flavours. It has the richness of a porter, but the sting of a pale ale. alesandangling (32) - Pueblo, Colorado, USA - FEB 10, 2011
The aroma is of roasted coffee and hops. It is very dark, not translucent. The taste is mellow malted grain, chocolaty in the beginning and finishes with a robust hop bitterness. The dry hopping is a great addition, making this a very good cascade porter/black IPA. I would not hesitate to purchase this again.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Chesapeake, VA. This is completely misclassified as a porter (this bottle even states "A Pioneer Black IPA" in small print). Dark brown cola-like pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of floral and grassy hops balanced with dark chocolate. Really nice combination of dark smoky malts, bitter chocolate, roasted espresso, grapefruit rind, and roses. The bitterness from the hops is quickly undercut by the bitterness from the malt. An impressive amount of flavor for a 6.7% ABV beer. Avery is often underrated but they never disappoint as far as I am concerned. Lunchb0x (20) - Prestonsburg, Kentucky, USA - MAY 24, 2013
Definitely not a bad brew at all. I don't have any other porter experience at the time to compare this to, but I think I was expecting it to be a thicker beer. The taste was great, but I'm sure there's better out there.

Rich chocolaty cocoa coffee and caramel all mixed into one. Dark brown pour with minimal head. Lots of maltiness. Very bitter finish. Great beet. ebone1988 (1974) - Dearborn, Michigan, USA - FEB 11, 2014
Aroma is hoppy, pine, sweet citrus, then malty, coffee, porter scent. Appearance is a very dark brown, close to black, not much head. Taste is complex, mostly porter flavors but finishes hoppy. Mouthfeel is thinner than I would hope but not too thin. Overall, this is an interesting take on a porter that everyone porter fan should experience.
