Nice body and beautiful color (dark red). Nice bittering hops, too, if you like that sort of thing. First thing that came to my mind was a dark IPA, which is sort of an oxymoron. Good stuff but certainly not the best beer in their line up. BeerLimey (2154) - California, USA - JAN 8, 2004
Reddish mahogany, relatively clear appearance, moderate head formation. Malty aroma, caramel and roasty. Sweet nutty malt flavor, some chocolate, decent hop citiric bitterness in the finish. Mangino (1027) - Mississippi, USA - JAN 14, 2005
Pours a dark cranberry juice red. with small tan head. Aroma is malty, with nuts and woods. Flavor similar, malty and a little wood to it, grapes, a little choclate/sweetness. Very interesting, and flavorful. Thanks to JPDipso for this one. brewbandit (312) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - FEB 15, 2005
Mahogany body with light tan head. Toasted coffee and chocolate nose. Light maltiness with a slight roasted malt bitterness in the finish. monty (39) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUN 15, 2005
15 June 2005. Bottle.
Very little head; a touch on the dark side for a barleywine.
Mouthfeel is soft and slippery - nice.
Funny cherry cola flavor and, oddly, a little coffee. Definitely sweet - lots of malts showing through. Hops are present, but not too biting.
This is good, but not as strong a showing as some of Avery’s other beers.

Good solid ale but not something I would insist on buying or drinking again. Gentle hop aroma with similiar taste. Balanced malt that is almost unnoticable and just enough hops to taste them but not overpowering or bold. Smooth balanced solid ale. joergen (28982) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - DEC 1, 2005
Clear red coloured with a medium sized off white head.
Sweet aroma with notes of fruits and spices with flowery notes.
Sweet fruity flavour with notes of mlats and caramel.
Hoppy finish. wilkie (1208) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - DEC 3, 2005
Draught. Brown appearance, with a lasting off-white head. Hoppy nose, with citrus and some malt. Flavor is very hoppy, and a little roasty in finish. Grass in aftertaste. Could be a nice beer, but the hopwreck kind of kills all of the other flavors that are supposed to be there. cherr (162) - Rochester, New York, USA - DEC 28, 2005
12 0z bottle. Deep brown with smell of roasted malt and chocolate. The taste is primarily the same as the smell -- minimal hop presence to balance the malt. Not a bad beer, but needs more hops. ontario102 (794) - Boise, Idaho, USA - JAN 5, 2006
Bottle: Sweet molassas, nut and light spicey hops; burnt nutty caramel notes, roasty and slightly dry finish; some alcoholic burn and astringency; OK
