A fine double IPA, but I had Avery’s Maharaja first, and I can’t help but think of this as sort of a session version of that delicious IPA. Raja pours cloudy yellow with average head and light carbonation. Like Maharaja, the aroma is maltier than I expect from a double IPA. But it’s a delicious aroma, with fruit and citrus tanginess behind the buttery richness. The flavor is rich and smooth and tasty, with the juicy IPA qualities working with, rather than drowning, the smooth malt. This beer doesn’t benefit from the branding, which forces Avery fans to compare it to the far superior Maharaja. But it stands on it’s own, and it’s a fine beer.
Can at home. Pours a slightly hazy amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma of orange peel, mango, pineapple, dry grass, hay, grapefruit and pine. Hint of pepper. More grass, pine and grapefruit in the flavour. Dry ending. Has a slick and soft mouth feel, medium to full body and a heavy bitterness. Fruity and hoppy IIPA. Pours slightly hazy amber with a thick and fairly persistent eggshell head. Aroma offers tart and sweet orange and grapefruit, piney hops, and an undernote of raw malt. Flavor is boldly hoppy and citrusy - piney and bitter, tangy orange and grapefruit, fresh malt providing a base. Mouthfeel delivers firm body and lively fizz. Fit for a Raja! Lots of lemon and a bit of pine with a bite of bitterness at the end from the dry hop. Creamy mouthfeel. Golden yellow in color.
