3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Funny thing about aroma, it’s so near and dear to memory. The first sniff of this brew brought me immediately back to the Mephistopheles stout; though that’s where similarities stop. This beers appearance of reddish ruddy brown and a ring leave a little to be desired to make me come running from across the room to try it. Appearances aren’t everything as eharmony will tell you, and tasting this beer is the real reward you get here. The flavors of sweet nectar, oak, and maple syrup dance across the palate. Solid, reminds me very much of a lost abbey angels share, but with a signature Avery taste.
Bottle - Sweet caramel and some booze. Clearish copper with almost no head. Sweet raisin and nice caramel. Heat on the throat. beerplace (2332) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 9, 2017
A pour from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Pours a bit hazy gold3n with no head. Aroma is supersweet and fruity. Simular taste. Good. AndyW68 (1641) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - SEP 14, 2017
Opaque brown with a tint of orange and minimal to.no head. Aroma is sweet raisin, wood and malt. Taste is overwhelming sweet at the start. Then alcohol and wood. Sweet, even for a barley wine. Does not have a smooth transition to the alcohol burn, and less stickiness than I would expect. Not bad, just not exceptional. DiarmaidBHK (6151) - Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 12, 2017
Taster at McLadden’s Northampton. Pours brown with no head. Doesn’t leave any lacing in the glass. Notes malt and wood on the nose. Lots of sweetness on the tongue. A bit of an alcohol burn on the finish. Not exactly my favorite style and this beer does nothing to change my mind. Zymurgeist2 (2440) - Redwood City, California, USA - JUN 27, 2017
Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City. This was just over the top cloying on the flavor. Massive alcohol.

2007 version in 2017. Deep reddish color. Big cherry, oak, slightly sour, vanilla, burnt raisins, brown sugar in the nose. Low alcohol brown sugar, some oxidization, burnt raisins, oak. Full body. Super intense. Really nice stuff. stevoj (5886) - Boise, Idaho, USA - JUN 8, 2017
Bottle from Bin 22. OMG! This really hit the spot right now. Tastes perfect. Medium to dark amber, small white fading head. Nice sweet malty aroma, very welcoming, caramel, toffee. Taste too favors sweet malts, some woody notes, caramel. Doesn’t present itself as boozy, but its apparent. Smooth, but ass-kicking. Good night. migwell (368) - Massachusetts, USA - MAY 31, 2017
UPDATED: JUN 21, 2017 Ab InBev? I caught on that I was a sap for writing free reviews on Amazon long ago. And when IMDB got absorbed... there went my reviews into the corporate pockets. So, I pull out from the sell-out here... it was nice. But how is ratebeer going to attract new users now that this news is public? The next time you go to a pub, are you going to admit to people you’re a RateBeer user? The first thing they’ll say is It’s owned by InBev. So people are going to stop telling others to join. And if RateBeer does attract new users, it’s going to be sort of people who don’t care about the war against big beer...and, in that way, the ratings will get skewed. Eventually it becomes like UnTappd...just a social network with lots of people who are not really into beer and don’t really know anything about it. Pours a clear mahogany from a bottle, quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma of turbinado, big boozy oak, flavor adds some vanilla syrup. Very good beer. sebastokrator (133) - - APR 29, 2017
Pours somewhere between copper and amber, with a nice foam. Nose is a lot of dark fruit: raisin, fig, and dates. Caramel and oak round out the scent. Taste is big and fruity with lots of caramel. There is some toffee, some more oak and a lot of booze. It’s really sweet. Medium bodied and super sticky. I wish it had more spice to play with the sweetness. As is, it’s pretty decent but would likely be even better when a couple more years on it.
