On tap GABF week 2009. Pours black with a moderate tan head. Aroma of cocoa, hot chocolate, pecans, wood...plain and simple this smells great! Tastes of dark chocolate, bakers chocolate, bourbon, wood, vanilla, and licorice. Finishes with anise, wood, cocoa dust and is quite dry on the throat. Thick and creamy mouthfeel, though this is one of those barrel aged beers that got too hot and a little thin from the process (though it is still heavy and all). 3fourths (9331) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 8, 2010
draft. 2009 batch. deep coffee brown, no head, oily thick legs. nose of reduced caramel chocolate syrup and alcohol. oily and viscous throughout with unbearable bourbon, honey/waffle and chocolate/coffee sugar sweetness. the out of sight stout (appropriately dry, properly attenuated) is much better than this. the mephistopheles influence (overly sweet soy sauce and burnt plastic/licorice) is unbearable. potbeerjob (1343) - Denver, Colorado, USA - DEC 16, 2009
Draught. Black with brown hue, thin head. Aroma is very woody and sweet, notes of caramel, chocolate, molasses and sugary syrup. Taste is sweet coffee balanced by light toasted notes and dark chocolate. Acquires coffee character as it warms. BeerandBlues2 (13202) - Escondido, California, USA - DEC 13, 2009
Draught at Avery Brewing. Pours opaque with a small, rocky light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, caramel, chocolate, coffee, toffee), little to no hop, average yeast (leather, earth) with notes of light alcohol, raisin, prune, dates, wood, and vanilla. Full bodied, creamy and thick texture, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness. kiefdog (1826) - Tampa, Florida, USA - OCT 31, 2009

Enjoyed at the Avery Taproom in Boulder, CO during GABF week, 2009. Black pour with a light tan head. Strong bourbon, vanilla, and chocolate aromas. Flavor is of baker’s chocolate, vanilla, and alcohol. Quite a blend and one of the best beers I tried the whole week. Incredible. hophead21112 (218) - Louisville, Colorado, USA - SEP 22, 2009
Black pour with garnett edges, tan brown head, average retention. Aroma consists of dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, maple syrup, sweet warm alcohol, probably more if it were served in a snifter. Flavors are dark chocolate, vanilla, slight oak. Starts off sweet vanilla and chocolate with carbonation, leads to brief hop bitterness on the middle palate and finishes slightly warm. Full body, low carbonation, moderately-high alcohol warmth. Ratman197 (14674) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - SEP 22, 2009
