COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

A: Roasted malt and dark, dried fruits are the dominant aroma. Very faint hints of sweet chocolate follow and maybe a whisper of coffee. A: Pours black with a two-and-a-half-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted several minutes. Great lacing. T: A deep roast flavor with chocolate and toffee. Virtually no bitterness present though. Faint coffee with a warming alcohol finish. P: Medium to full bodied with just the right level of carbonation. O: A wonderful representation of the style, it is a nice, flavorful imperial stout with great booze heat that feels a bit thinner and less substantial than many, but World Class in every other regard.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/10/2015. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of coffee, raisin, fig, date, licorice, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of coffee, raisin, fig, date, licorice, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, dark fruit, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, lightly slick/silky, and slightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol. Overall this is an outstanding Russian imperial stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV. This is not nearly as roasty or dense as others in the style; but still has awesome malt complexity, in combination with fruity yeast and earthy hop flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

From a 22oz bottle that I paid $3 for.... because SE 14th Hy-Vee was magical for like one weekend.
Pours the darkest of browns with a medium sized head thats well retained, but doesnt have much lace production.

The aroma is dark fruit and some leafy hops. Its got a big roastiness and a lot of sweet maltiness. There is some dark chocolate aroma that dominates as the beer warms and theres a reasonable bit of alcohol on the nose too.

The flavor is pleasantly bitter with a big (but not out of control) sweetness throughout. Its got roasty malt and dark chocolate bitterness. Its got some toffee and leafy hoppiness with a good bit of alcohol warmth.

Originally sampled on 12/8/08. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts and slight hints of cherries. Appearance was dark black body mid sized light tan cap. Good mouthfeel, creamy and it had a little thickness. Flavors were o.k. nothing outstanding, and it was a little sweet. Overall it was a decent imp. stout.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 16 ounce bottle. Appearance: pours black with a brown, tan head. Aroma: Smell of dark fruit and some cocoa, slight booziness detectable as it warms. Taste: sweet and malty with rich dark fruits carrying the middle and some sweet breadiness at the close. Palate: medium with relatively high carbonation. Overall: dynamic malt flavors with just enough hop bitterness to give it edge.
