Dark ruby brown, with a small, tan ring. The nose is delicate hickory smoke, molasses, cloves, and black bread. Sweet and wonderfully malty, with a touch of bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a malty, sticky feel. This is a solid, lovely, very well balanced beer. Perfect smoke. altonbrownd (5898) - Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA - OCT 9, 2016
[9/7/2016] On tap at Churchkey : Dark red body. Nose smoky. Taste of meats, and malts and cereal. Smooth texture. DCLawyer (2839) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - OCT 2, 2016
Draft at Churchkey. Dark brown with small lite tan head. A: big bacony smoke, roasted malt. T: roasted meat and roasted malt, some smoke; thinner than expected given depth of aroma. Ok. GenDV138 (7231) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - SEP 21, 2016

On tap at the brewery October 2014. Pours a cloudy copper with thick frothy beige head. The aroma is spice, toasted grain, smoke. Medium body, similar flavors to nose, light finish, good. andrewje41 (3767) - Kenmore, Washington, USA - FEB 9, 2016
Draft pour pint at Special Brews. Cool to find this one laying around. I would have expected to see this as a taproom exclusive. Lucky for me I have had a couple chances to see those beers. Pours a muddy brown color worth almost no head. I love that this style is disliked so much, yet I think they are great. Maybe they are misunderstood. Smokey, oak and malt aroma. Very cool flavor, with a toasty, slight smoke, paired with a modest amount of sweetness. Not offended on this one. Actually quite nice. after4ever (8025) - Mukilteo, Washington, USA - FEB 8, 2016
Draft at SB. Pours a murky dark brown with a scant white head. Sticky sweet bacony nose. Sticky thick body with minimal carb. Sweet bacon mid palate. Heavy and cloying. Such a rad reference for that name and label, though. slowrunner77 (11930) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 9, 2014
"Chestnut colored, full bodied. This doppelbock has all the bready goodness I expect from the style with a not-as-subtle-as -advertised smoke aroma and flavor...which was awesome. Great new beer, I’d definitely get this often if I could." solidfunk (8838) - Washington D.C., Washington DC, USA - AUG 22, 2014
A little heavy on the smoke, without much left over. Reddish orange pour and ok head and lacing here. Some light caramel. Tap at Black Squirrel.
