This is extremely intense. Massive flavor. Like a straight shot of espresso but without the all of the coffee negatives. This is perfectly balanced from front to back, start to finish. there is no way you could improve this beer. just the right amount of hops matched to the sweetness. steers away from the dark fruits and stays in the coffee dark chocolate realm. Hellsspresso!!!!!! Jvezp (86) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 13, 2013
Had it at the 2013EBF, great beer espresso beer, I was blown away by this offering by Avery, I’m happy I had the luck of drinking this. Had to rate it a 5 imeshuggahi (31) - golden, Colorado, USA - SEP 2, 2010
If I was able to purchase bottles of this brew, coffee in the morning would become obsolete. The only reason my rating is not 5.0 is because I do not believe in perfect beers (I had to re-evaluate my beliefs after drinking this one). The possibilities of stout variation is pretty extensive, yet the coffee/espresso (see great divides espresso yeti, muy bueno) still remains one of my favorites. It says something about a big, black brew, that while in the heat of summer "I will still crave thee". On to the next... BallmersPeak (1) - Colorado, USA - DEC 31, 2011 does not count
He is the one who knocks, bitch.
Straight espresso aroma and flavor. Even coats the tongue the same.

One of my favorites from the 2009 Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Wonderful nose ... I could smell it and be happy for hours. Thick and rich on the tongue, like motor oil. Extremely rich and roasty, with elements of black coffee, sludgy molasses and dark chocolate. Thankfully, a high dosing of hops followed. Heavy grass and pine and dark fruit. Espresso weaved in and out of everything. Lip-smacking sweetness lingered on the lips, complemented by resinous hop oils on the tongue. I need to try this again ... just might give it a 5. deafie (1) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 24, 2009 does not count
Had this beer at the Avery Taphouse. Very tasty. Coffee lingers around on the tongue like crazy.
Overall very nice. craftbeerdesign (2254) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAR 1, 2010
Draft sample @ Brewvival on 2/27/10. I have really been looking forward to this beer after reading about it and it did not disappoint.... One of my favorites at the festival for sure... there are so many amazing things happening with this stuff - pitch black pour with a nice rocky tan head - doesn’t get any better.... Huge coffee / espresso nose - I could really smell this beer all day.... would be a great way to start the morning as well (except for the 16% alcohol)... slight vanilla notes linger... huge roasted malts flow through the body along with a deep coffee bitterness. Solid finish with a touch of alcohol heat - the coffee really knocks it down compared to the standard Meph... by far my favorite coffee beer - really easy drinking for 16%... FINALLY! YES! Black pour. Aroma is coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee and a little chocolate. Flavor? ALL COFFEE ALL THE TIME. Rich and sweet. Espresso and coffe overload and I love it! ksurkin (1021) - Norfolk, Virginia, USA - FEB 28, 2010
draft at Brewvival. nothing like starting out the day with a massive 16% coffee blasted impy. pours a sludgy black with a huge, thick, dark brown head sticky lace. aroma is amazing with huge roast coffee, espresso, cocoa powder, sweet malts, and more coffee with a hint of wood and dark fruits. flavor is absolutely delicious with rich, sticky dark chocolate, massive coffee, and huge dark fruit notes with a hint of bourbon, leather, and leafy hops. palate was slick, rich, lightly carbonated and boozy...the perfect way to start out a fantastic festival.
