COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A double dose of vanilla derived from both fresh Bourbon barrels and the trio of Tongan, Ugandan, and Mexican whole vanilla beans is complemented by essences of chocolate, caramel, and molasses to round out this luxuriously silky stout. After Raspberry Sour, this is the 2nd installment of Avery’s Botanicals & Barrels series.

Bouteille 66cl via trade, thanks Arturo. Bottled 2016/04.

Pours dark brown with a creamy, tan head. Aroma is bourbon with mild coconut notes. A sort of pina colada mixed with bourbon. The lightest of licorice notes lingers under it all. Taste is sweet up front with a light sourness that plays out in the finish. Full of bourbon but yet not overly boozy. A nice balance is maintained. Body is medium to heavy, carbonation a touch more than average for an impy, I would prefer less. The depth and range of flavors does not put the brew among the top beers of this style but this is still a solid offering.

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2018 Dark brown with creamy head, medium body, heavy dose of hops for a stout with strong hints of vanilla beans. The bourbon hides beneath those two flavors. It's an interesting brew but not one that I completely love.

2 finger tan head. Pitch black beer.

Aroma is molasses, slight coconut, soy, vanilla, caramel, slight coffee and slightly nutty, along with some barrel characteristics. Some belgian yeast notes aswell.

Taste is coffee, slight soy, burnt wood, light toffee, molasses, light vanilla, oak barrel, weak hint of acetone and overall heavily roasted & ashy.

Mouthfeel is super smooth with a strong ale type of carbonation. Roaring yet calm. Bourbon is the only alcohol note present. Medium, burnt bitterness. A bit insipid after a while.

Overall: Been holding on to this for a while and just now found a perfect night to enjoy this 65cl bottle. A bit underwhelming to be honest. Avery definitely know how to brew quality beers and this is just a matter of preference. It's good and well made, no doubt about that but it's just this type of stout.. I love heavily roasted stuff but this particular blend of old school stout flavours just never really impresses me. Good, subtle barrel notes in this but doesn't really have the flavours or the body to carry a heavier beer like this fully. I'm so torn, I feel like this rating is way too low but I like what I like.

650ml bottle, 11.0 % abv, kindly shared by Finn. Pitch black body, covering filmy layer, dotted spots on the glass. Inviting smell of roasted malts with a touch of vanilla. Nuts, oak, and vanilla chocolate flavours, bourbon backbone. Long-lived aftertaste of chocolate and bourbon. Smooth on the swallow. Decent sipper with good friends on a Saturday eve. (Tromsø 24.02.2018).
