Before Miss Fancy came to Avondale, she belonged to a travelling circus that toured the country. One of Miss Fancy’s favorite companions at the circus was a joker and magician. He was a mischievous fellow, doing card tricks, juggling acts and other feats of amazement. You should see what he can do with some coffee beans and hops!

No Joka Mocha is a coffee oatmeal chocolate stout that is decidedly weighted towards the coffee end of the taste spectrum. This brew has a blackish pour with a creamy tan head. Solid coffee aroma greets the nose with deep rich malts in the background. It has a medium body that is slightly sweet, light chocolate and finishes smooth with the oatmeal. Our special blend of Blue Batak Sumatran Coffee used in this brew comes to us specially roasted from our good friend Woody at Finer Grind Coffee Roasters. Together with Woody, we combined our passion for beer and coffee together to craft this seasonal brew.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2014 Draft. Black with medium tan head. Strong aroma of coffee with some notes of roasted malt. Medium body with strong coffee flavor upfront, some malt sweetness, and a slight bitter finish. Very nicely balanced with not too much coffee flavor or bitterness. -- Aroma of stale coffee and roasted malts. Medium body with stale coffee notes and chocolate. Not as good this time around.

On tap at brewpub. Potent sweetened coffee aroma with a little milk and toasted hazelnut. Opaque black with clear garnet highlights. Sweet coffee flavour up front, that develops into toasted hazelnuts and a sight red fruit accent. Dry finish and moderate coffee bitterness. Medium light body, moderate carbonation, crisp coffee finish.

Smells like a shot of espresso. Looks like a shot of espresso (black with a creamy tan head). Flavor has a bitter black coffee dominance. Notes: Brewery visit, summer ’13

Growler from Hop City Birmingham. Pours a dark chestnut color with a small tan head. Aroma is a nutty, roasted chocolate and coffee. More coffee in the flavor with a hint of sweetness. Thinner body. Pretty nice.

Draft at Free the Hops FestivAle in Birmingham. Opaque brown color. Aroma of soft roast. Taste is roasty coffee, subtle cocoa. Tasty.

Bottle split with the brother - pours pitch, with a white head. What’s that sweet chocolate thing I’m getting? Oh yeah, the fudge I’m eatting with this beer. Sadly, the aroma is burnt coffee and the taste reflects the same. I’m not feeling this one.

Bottle from Wish you were beer. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Has a slightly buttery thing on the nose. Tastes like burnt coffee. Not a good beer.

Deep coffee flavor without being a novelty. Smokey. Avondale goes a bit light on the ABV on most of their beers - would have preferred more bite in a stout. Overall I’m impressed and was not expecting much out this brew. Compare to Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout.

Pours an opaque dark chocolate brown - not much head, but this was a short pour from a bottle at the HMOG. Roast coffee aroma is very tempting. Flavor has notes of quality coffee, chocolate and roast malt. No joking. Smooth, firm texture leaves a nice coffee finish.

The best of the Avondale mix but mainly yeast and dark coffee flavor. Very dark. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Pours a dark almost completely black with a more than off white head. Smels like chocolate and coffee. Has a vwry distinct coffee flavor up front. Tangy in the middle. Finishes off much more mild than I expected. Very very good coffee stout.
