4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Off-white brown fine sandy head floats like a cloud and then dissolves in about ten minutes over a clear brown body with foamy lacing.
Aroma is wet dough, funk, roast malt, toast, raisin.
Taste is mild sweet, salt, and bitter with a hint of umami and delivers the dark, ripe, fruit aroma.
Palate is a nice, coarse feel, with a classy medium full body. So texture is thick with lively carbonation and a medium slightly bitter finish.
I like Ayinger; and this Altbairisch Dunkel is very good at only 5% abv.
From May 2006
Poured from 500ml bottle a very dark amber with a medium sized head of foam that dissipated quickly leaving just a fine layer with some lacing.
The smell is a strong scent of roasted malt that suggests some sweetness is waiting for me in the taste.
The taste up front is also of roasted malt, lots of it and there's lots of chocolate notes there as well making for some nice, sweet, yummy goodness that lasts all the way through the finish. Man, I could easily drink a couple of these...err....I have done that before. lol
Bottom line: I've had this Dunkel many times before and I'm glad I've finally reviewed it. It's a winner that I can easily recommend cuz it's just so damn tasty! panda_brewmaster (17) - Bournemouth, Dorset, ENGLAND - OCT 16, 2017

Bottle from Brewers Droop, Bristol. Small, lightly off-white head, dark golden/ruby colour, clear. Aroma: malts, roasted bread, bit of berries. Lightly bitter with sort of dry/coffee aftertaste, but not too strong. Full body, average carbonation. Really nice, smooth, fantastic. martpez (282) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - SEP 7, 2017
Wonderful amber red colour lovely texture too. Texture is a touch metallic with this bottle though. Some roasted malts coming through with very little in the way of a hoppy character except a mild dry finish at the end. Decent. Would like to try this on tap to get a better grasp of its character.

0.5 l bottle from ’REWE Budnik & Homberg’, best before November 2017. Clear, dark reddish amber with a medium large, dense, stable, off-white head. Sweetish, malty, slightly roasty and a little grassy-spicy aroma of caramel, toasted nuts, some chocolate and hints of straw. Quite sweet, malty, slightly roasty and even a bit fruity taste of caramel, raisins, toasted nuts, some prunes and a touch of straw, followed by a short, slightly bitter, a bit roasty and a little grassy-spicy finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very nice Dunkel, really tasty, quite deep for the style as well.
