Once upon a time a giant was imprisoned inside a rye whiskey barrel. For over a year he sat in silence and total darkness and finally, he fell asleep. In time the world forgot about him. Until one day, a brave mead maker with a magical mustache discovered the giant, and put it in a bottle. At over 19% abv, this mead should not be taken lightly. Uncork the bottle and awaken the Sleeping Giant.

Pours a light yellow hue. Aroma is boozy, full of whiskey and oak. The flavor is big, rich, and bold. Loads of whiskey and barrel. There is a huge vanilla laden honey blast that helps to even out the boozy blast. This is a very big mead. Man do I love it though. I will savor every last drop in this bottle and look forward to consuming more. A top 10 all time mead for me.

375 ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. The mead is a clear yellow. Still. The aroma has sweet honey, moderate woody notes from the barrels, and is a bit boozy. I was expecting this to be over the top boozy with the alcohol content, but it is surprisingly mellow. I’ve had the mead for over a year though, so it could have given it time to calm down. I was very impressed by this one.

Bottle shared by Douglass88. Colour...very pale straw. Nose...very honey bunny but not much rye. Still, very pretty scents. Palate...dry, sweet and sappy with honeyed chamomile, pekoe and jasmine. The finish is long and oaky with nips of rye.

September 18, 2015. Bottle, shared by _angst_, thanks!
Clear pale golden with some nice legs, no head. Aroma is sweet honey, some vanilla, oak, whiskey, alcohol with some glue notes. Taste is very sweet and boozy with a light spicy note. Finish is sweet with honey, toffee, vanilla, quite intense boozy notes with some bourbon character and light spiciness. Full bodied, no carbonation, oily texture.
Good but too hot with some higher alcohol notes.

Boozey mead smell. Taste is decent generic honey mead with a bit of an alcohol presence but it’s not too bad. Medium body.

Shared thanks to Dan. Pours a clear brownish golden yellow. I was expecting a big boozy bomb and it was a tad more refined than I expected. Aromas of sweet honey, alcohol is certainly there, slight vanilla. Taste is sweet with an alcohol kick. Medium thick body.

375ml bottle shared by DCLawyer, thanks! Poured a clear dark yellow color, mostly still. Honey comes through pretty strong in this one, boozy legs on it. Sweet, but dry enough to be enjoyable. Nice.

Lots of honey and some pepper. Amber pour. Sweet finish with a touch of pepper. Bottle.

Lukaduke (3206) - Gray, Maine, USA - JAN 16, 2016
Pours a still deep amber color. Lots of spicy notes on the nose with some pumpernickel bread, buckwheat honey and sweet caramel. Palate is sweet with a spicy bourbon heat on the background that reads a bit peppery and herbal. Sweetness definitely hides the abv but the twangy dark bitter citrus note on the finish introduces a bit of burn and medicinal lingering flavor.
