UPDATED: MAY 15, 2008 Cask, Far From The Madding Crowd. Brown highlighted black, dense tawny brown head. Lovely, bottomless depth of soft caramel and milk chocolate; buttery, but very complimentary here. Flavor is much less sweet than the aroma would indicate. A far more restrained caramel flavor, earthy coffee, and sour dark chocolate. Silky on the palate. A lovely, welcoming beer. (Re-rate: Not going to kill my previous rating, but just had this again at FFTMC, and what a completely different experience. Nose was smoke, bananas, bubblegum and instant coffee. Smoke and brown bread flavor with more bananas. Not much depth or interest. 6/3/5/2 11. Wonder if the recipe has changed or this was just an old cask?) (One more rating update here as of 15/5/08: Again at FFTMC. Got to comment on just how amazing the mouthfeel of this is for a 4.5% beer. Bass P2, at 8%, had less sliky fullness than this little beauty.)

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2007. Had this in error as the guy behind the counter poured me the wrong beer, but even so this had plenty of malt to keep it going. Very roasted malts, bit powdery in mouth, intense flavours, some dark fruit. Powdery, dry finish.

[email protected] Beer Festival 2007. Black beer with a light head. The aroma is lightly coffee and the flavour is coffee and dry. Overall a milky slightly dry beer.

A Mes rate: Gravicask @ Planet Thanet. My final beer of what was an excellent festival. Decent stout but let down a little by a very slightly watery palate. Other than that it has all the roasty coffee and dark chocolate with a delicate sourness on the finish.

[email protected] Hunters. Very dark brown, steady tan head. Sweet berry-like aroma, slightly toasted malty, hints of brewing mash. Smooth, full-bodied, Guinness-like. Roasted malty, with coffeish and bitter finish. Long bitter aftertaste.

sayravai (4710) - Helsinki, FINLAND - OCT 27, 2006
([email protected], Helsinki) Very dark brown, almost black color with a smallish, but creamy and lasting, lacy head. Roasted-malty, slightly sweet, salty and licoricey aroma. Burned-malty, very licoricey flavor with some rubbery earthiness and a burned, sweet-sourish, quickly fading finish. No bitterness to speak of. Slicky and oily, light to medium-bodied palate with low carbonation. Definitely not bad for a real ale.

Black brown-tinged. Thin layer of foam. Cocoa to the nose. Light (watered) sweet chocolate flavour with a touch of anise (Half on gravity. St Albans Beer Festival 28.09.2006).
