COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We have California to blame for giving us the Kardashians. But, we can forgive this travesty because many years before it’d given us Steam Beer - lagers fermented at ale temperatures. Our version, brewed with citrusy and woody hops as well as the original hop variety used in the 19th century, probably won’t earn its own reality TV show, but it won’t get exposed in a sex tape either.

On tap at Union Hotel, Newtown. Pours a biscuity orange gold with a white head. Aroma: mild citrus, grapefruit and malt notes. Mild aroma. Taste: citrus, grapefruit, mango, papaya, biscuity and sweet malt flavours. Quite fruity for the style. Thin bodied. Moderate carbonation. Easy drinking. Quite tasty. I enjoyed this beer much more than I expected to.

080617. Bottle from Bucket Boys. This is a no fuss lager that goes down well. Darker in colour than a lot of lagers that I have had and carries a clean white head. Medium bodied in the mouth with a moderate flavour.

Tap at the Catfish, Melbourne. Poured a clear straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is skunky malt, floral hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a dry cardboard malt, floral hop bitter palate. Dry and floral all round.

Looks like a regular lager, perhaps slightly darker. Taste and aroma are much more hop driven. Not normally a lager drinker, but this one appealed to me. Very drinkable, summery.

Bottle. Brownish pale amber with a white head. Weedy aroma with vague citrus, boiled lollies - a bit rough and speaks to my prejudices about this obsolete technique. But it’s smoother in taste with fairly clean hay and grass and decent herbal and citrusy bitterness that gives bite without being harsh at the end. Not really my sort of thing, but refreshing enough.
