omhper (25380) - Tyresö, SWEDEN - MAY 26, 2009
Draught at Popeye, Tokyo. Very dark brown, no head. Grapefruity nose. Dryish with clean mouthfeel. Crystal malt barely covered in licorice with citric hops driving it towards a mid-bitter finish.

Keg at Popeye - Tokyo. Pours deep brown with a creamy tan head. Nice burnt pine aroma, moderate roast, baking cocoa. Light-medium sweet flavour with a little ash, orange peel, more bitter chocolate, roast, pine. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Well balanced finish, more baking cocoa, adequate toasted malts, mild ash, aged citrus. Solid overall.

Theis (15152) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - OCT 15, 2009
Draught at Popeye, Tokyo. Clear dark brown - offwhite head. Sharpness, roasted, dried fruits, lovely hoppy, high bitterness, grape fruity, licorice. Nice.

KyotoLefty (10539) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 2, 2010
Draught at Popeye. Very hoppy nose--American hops, with grass and citrus, also chocolate, caramel and a nice dark malt background. Very hoppy flavor with nice earthiness and roasty malts. Chocolate and coffee work with extreme bitterness. Good.

My Bottom Line:
Dried berries and roasted malts aplenty coalesce and hug the herbal, resinous hoppiness of this lovely India Black Ale. A comparison with their Fast Impact would be intriguing (and very pleasurable), if the two beers could be tasted under the same roof...

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the brownish blackness.
-All these flavors blend admirably, retaining complexity and a high level of flavor.
-Although there is a lot going on in here, the end product is very drinkable.
-If you like this, you will love their Fast Impact, brewed for Ushitora, another ji-biru bar in Tokyo.

On tap at Popeye’s.
