COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baird Ganko Oyaji ("Stubborn Old Man") Barley Wine gains its depth and complexity from simple enough sources -- i.e. a grist bill featuring just English Marris Otter pale ale and caramel malts (as well as a hint of Japanese candy sugar), and a hop bill highlighting English Fuggles. The hedonistic pleasure plays out oxymoronically -- i.e. bitter and sweet, heavy and light, exhilarating and exhausting.

Samtzu (441) - Palmerston North, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 25, 2017
330ml Bottle. Pours a light brown with off white head. Sweet nose with hints of a hidden malt complexion. Full body with the strong caramel flavours and malt backbone.

explosivedog (1174) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - APR 19, 2017
360ml bottle (2013 version @ 10%). Pours dark brown without head. Caramel, toffee, raisins, candied orange, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, vanilla. Very sweet, not much attempt at balance, but all the better for it.

February 22nd, 2017 - Ganko Oyaji is one of the burlier, if not the burliest, brews available at their Takadanobaba tasting room. With a deep dark color, it looks the part, and the smell is stuffed with dark fruits, brown sugar and a boozy finish. Both the 2016 and 2017 smelled largely the same, save that the 2016 version’s alcohol note is more pronounced and a little more raw. The same is true of the flavors, each featuring the depth of sweetness of apple sauce, some ripe esters (bananas right before it’s banana bread time) and some figs. But there’s plenty of body to go around, holding up the fermented tasting sugars.

DuffMan (10421) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 29, 2015
Bottle. Reddish amber, hazy, with a very low beige head that retains poorly. Sweet sticky malts, floral notes, Swedish Berry Candy notes, low bitterness. A bit simple, but ok.

Theydon_Bois (19481) - Hazlemere, the lower Xhitlerns, Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - JUN 21, 2015
Keg at the 4th Copenhagen Beer Celebration, Session 2, 01/05/2015. Lightly hazed amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is mellow fruit, caramel, floral notes, sweet tunes. Taste comprises dark fruit rinds, earthy hop presence, toffee, perfume. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok but a little overly floral and lacking depth for my liking.
