COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baird Natsumikan Summer Ale is an extraordinarily unique beer that was an immense challenge to brew. Wheat and barley combine in equal proportions as the base malt; Japanese candy sugar contributes five percent of the fermentables; and freshly peeled and crushed natsumikans (Japanese summer mikans) from both Shizuoka and Fukuoka are added to the kettle at the end of wort boiling (approximately 33 kg of natsumikans per 225 liters wort). The natsumikans from Shizuoka (the Heda garden of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san) are quite large, grapefruit-like mikans with a distinct grapefruit-like tart and sour character. The Fukuoka mikans (from the Kita-Kyushu orchard of beer enthusiast and friend, Tago-san), on the other hand, are smaller, sweeter and more orange-like in character. Aprroximately 75% of the natsumikans we used come from Shizuoka and 25% from Fukuoka

Also known as Shizuoka Summer Mikan.

Bottle: Orange hued golden, sudsy white head, dies quickly, sparce lacing.   Floral nose, slight tangarine

or mandarin.   Definitely citrusy but not the citrus peel that is so common.   This one is moreso like the

inside of some citrus type of fruit.   Slight clove, both on nose and on the tongue.   Soft sweetness, a

little flat on the tongue.   Comes across as a very light Fruit Beer, mixed with either clove or some sort of

floralness.   Slightly dry on the finish.   Not half bad, certainly comes across as real fruit and not a fake

sugary example.

Bottle at Butters’ Slutfest: Orange blossom and lemon aroma, reminiscent of sorachi hops. Hazy amber, with floaties, medium yellow head. Orange peel flavor from beginning to end, but finishes tart like a cumquat, but not as sour. Refreshing and tasty. Very unique.

TimE (6163) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAY 25, 2006
Cloudy dark brown orange color. It looks more like a meal than a drink. A slightly tart mikan nose erupts, along with citrus fruits, cotton candy and some sweet maltiness. Sweet malty mouth is well balanced with ample hops and a refreshing tartness. Mikan, candy apples and cotton candy all come through. Sweet malty finish. Yum. This is one of the better fruit beers I have had.

This kicks ass over his other Mikan ale (why a brewery brews two mikan ales, I don’t know).

Pours hazy gold into a tulip. Head quickly recedes to hug rim. Stale wheat, pit fruit and citrus aromas. Herbs and tangy tropical fruit upfront. Dry finish.

Hazy orange pour, white head. Citrus, orange juice, sweet malt, bread, light spice, and tropical fruit. Tastes pretty good, the more I drink the more orange I notice.

On tap (as "Baird Natsumikan Ale") at Pudel, Tallinn. Slightly hazy golden with a white head.
Rather mild, fruit aroma with unfamiliar fruits, some pale malt and hints of yeast and spices. Moderate sweet with mild, but pleasant flavours and a light bitterness. Enjoyable.

Bottle: Pours a cloudy orange color with a nice thick pure white head. The nose is bright and fruity with tons of orange and crispy hop notes. The fruitiness in the nose moves its way seamlessly into the flavor. A bit more sweeter than it is bitter, a hopped up version (ala, the IPA) would be a lot better. Almost like a pummelo, the fruit adds a lot to this that the hops normally would. Nice combination.

Thanks sebletitje for the share. Pours hazy orange gold with a white head. Nose is orange, malt, spice, citrus fruit, sugary light fruit, and star fruit. Flavor is a lot of sweetness and light fruit that is beginning to make me think that there is a basic Japanese fruit for beers like these. Light bodied and very sessionable, enjoyable beer.
