COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baird Natsumikan Summer Ale is an extraordinarily unique beer that was an immense challenge to brew. Wheat and barley combine in equal proportions as the base malt; Japanese candy sugar contributes five percent of the fermentables; and freshly peeled and crushed natsumikans (Japanese summer mikans) from both Shizuoka and Fukuoka are added to the kettle at the end of wort boiling (approximately 33 kg of natsumikans per 225 liters wort). The natsumikans from Shizuoka (the Heda garden of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san) are quite large, grapefruit-like mikans with a distinct grapefruit-like tart and sour character. The Fukuoka mikans (from the Kita-Kyushu orchard of beer enthusiast and friend, Tago-san), on the other hand, are smaller, sweeter and more orange-like in character. Aprroximately 75% of the natsumikans we used come from Shizuoka and 25% from Fukuoka

Also known as Shizuoka Summer Mikan.

I had this as Baird’s Shizuoka Summer Mikan Ale. 235ml for 700 yen at Tadg’s. Citrus hoppy aroma with a subtle touch of Mikan. Light smooth mouthfeel. Wow, you really get the mikan flavor, then a crisp bitter hop bite. A nice summer brew!

Bottle thanks to Bu11zeye. The look is cloudy, bright orange color, with an ok off white head. The smell is fruity, hops, flowers, and tropical fruit. The taste is hops, low bitterness, flowers, some malts, and fruits.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of light hops, light grapefruit, light malts, and some citrus. Poured orange/amber in color with a medium-sized white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Full of tiny and small particles throughout. Flavor is lightly sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of hops, slight grapefruit, slight tangerine, and a hint of pale malts. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Sweet hops and tangerine finish.

22OZ bottel pours a very cloudy pale orange/light amber. Small off-white head. Aroma is orange mango or tangerine and sweet citrusy hops. Malt flavors are light and fruity and while there is some hop flavor, there is not much bitterness from them. Strange fruity flavors but not bad. Soft carbonation.

633oz bottle. Big white foamy rings of lace surrounded the glass of this clear orange ale. Flavor of toasted grains, chocolate, and sour tangerine. Not sure where the chocolate comes from, since it doesn’t match the color. And the tart clementine is a very dominate flavor in this offering. Aroma of citrus zest and bread. I just can’t get over how much malt character there is and to be toppled by such an acidic sour orange tartness. It’s a fantastic fruit beer.

Tap at CBM Koenji. Lots of orange in the aroma and initial taste, quite spritzy, almost like a soluble vitamin c tablet. Bit wheaty too. Pretty nice! Light sourness from the citrus. Liked this more than I expected.

Sampled at Slutfest 2.0. Hazy orange pour with particulate suspended and faint offwhite head. Not sure what a natsumikan is, but it tastes like bitter orange peels. Zesty nose. Interesting.

Bottle. Thanks Jon! I liked this more and more as it got a warmer. The tart fruit flavor is much more evident as the beer breathes and warms up a little bit. Kind of grainy and cardboard-like at first, but this again, improves with each sip. Lightly bitter and very drinkable.

(bottle - 22 oz) Clear golden color with a fizzy and effervescent white head. Good carbonation. Aroma is light and fruity with a good amount of hops and spice followed by a sweetness that I couldn’t identify but I can assume only is the mikans. Imparts a bit of citrus as well. Flavor has a strong citrus character at the beginning mixing well with hops and other floral notes, as well as some yeast and spice. The fruitiness from the mikans (again I’m guessing) comes through and passes a good amount of grapefruit-like characteristics. Finishes rather fizzy, tart, and sweet. Very interesting.
