COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baird Natsumikan Summer Ale is an extraordinarily unique beer that was an immense challenge to brew. Wheat and barley combine in equal proportions as the base malt; Japanese candy sugar contributes five percent of the fermentables; and freshly peeled and crushed natsumikans (Japanese summer mikans) from both Shizuoka and Fukuoka are added to the kettle at the end of wort boiling (approximately 33 kg of natsumikans per 225 liters wort). The natsumikans from Shizuoka (the Heda garden of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san) are quite large, grapefruit-like mikans with a distinct grapefruit-like tart and sour character. The Fukuoka mikans (from the Kita-Kyushu orchard of beer enthusiast and friend, Tago-san), on the other hand, are smaller, sweeter and more orange-like in character. Aprroximately 75% of the natsumikans we used come from Shizuoka and 25% from Fukuoka

Also known as Shizuoka Summer Mikan.

22 oz. bottle. $6 @ Binny’s, April 2011. Poured into a smallish pilsener glass, just to get a good look at the stuff. Pours hazy gold with red highlights, and a lot of particles floating around. If the base style was a Belgian wheat beer, this could be seen as OK. Big fizzy head. Smell starts off with golden ale malt, a bit of sour note. Nice, just not a BIG smell, I guess. Have to say, though, the taste is not that much of a much. Maybe I let it sit around to long. All I can really get is a Fat Tire with hard Mandarin oranges in it. Guess I should have had this fresher.

Well I’ve never had natsumikan but this beer is full of it! Pronounced fruity nose and flavors, vaguely citrus (grapefruit) and tropical (mango). Mostly it reminds me of pomelo. Otherwise nice beer, bready zesty doughy/yeasty, refreshing. Quite a bit of yeast sediment came out at final pour, so it went from a mild hazy golden yellow to a cloudier dark orange. I found it rather enjoyable and refreshing on the whole.

Tap. Hazy orange color. Small size, white head, stays. Yeasty, grainy, hoppy, passionfruit, sourish in aroma. Citrus, yeasty, bubblegum and tobacco in taste. Quite flat. Bubblegum and tobacco hops in aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Soft bitterness. Drinkable brew.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2017 Tap (Biiru Bday #4 @ Brewdog, Tallinn) as "Shizuoka Summer Mikan" (5:3:5:2:12=2.7)
Watery and citrus fruity aroma, some coriander seed sharpness. Watery palate, decent carbonation, maybe a bit high. Tastes a bit watered down too, some wheatiness. Citrussy hops, tingly finish (Anna gets a bit of dry yeast in the finish also). A bit dull. However, decently balanced, and an OK refreshing ale, so more compelling than any of its component parts.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours gold with a thin white head. Taste sweet initially but fades fast, citrus, wheat. I thought this was ok. I could drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours light golden with a sight haze and white head. Light wheaty malty aroma. Light malt/wheaty flavor with citrus like fruit notes. Quite refreshing, a great summer beer. Notes: Bottle at Lotus of Siam
