COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first key to a great Double IPA is dryness of character despite the high original gravity. This is accomplished, foremost, through high attenuation by the yeast during fermentation. We aim for an apparent attenuation around 85% which yields relative dryness and alcohol strength. The second key is a fantastic and powerful hop aroma. This we achieve by dry hopping Suruga Bay Imperial IPA with several varieties of pungently strong American hops. We conduct this dry hopping not once but twice, in two separate tanks. Then, at packaging, to ensue a vigorous secondary fermentation and natural carbonation, we krauesen Suruga Bay with a percentage of peak fermentation beer from a different batch. Suruga Bay Imperial IPA is a wickedly compelling flavor experience. Its hop character is as rich as Japan’s Suruga Bay is deep (it is Japan’s deepest bay and Baird Brewing is located on its inner shore). The greatness of Suruga Bay Imperial IPA resides in a supreme drinkability that pervades in spite of the potency.

Palme (4811) - Bergen, NORWAY - JUL 2, 2012
0.36l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This is a blurry glowing orange-honey colored beer with a small bubbly, lacing off-white head. The aroma is fruity and caramel sweet with passion fruits, strawberries, sticky caramel and some citrus. It’s average carbonated with a slick texture. Flavors are hoppy and caramel sweet. Almost a bit pungent, but not in a matter that it’s to disturbing. Some ripe citrus fruits going on here as well before it ends in a light dry tongue. An OK DIPA. 16.06.2012

Bottle, shared with BBGTC. Pours a clear orange body with a big creamy head. Nice. Aroma is caramel, malts, syrupy hops, hints of honey melon and citrus. Taste is bitter grassy hops, grapefruit, melon, hints of peaches and resin. The mouthfeel is good; soft and creamy. Despite this, the overall impression I’m left with is that this is not too balanced, somehow. Or exciting, for that matter. Decent enough, though.

ration (2238) - Tampere, FINLAND - JUN 16, 2012
Pours hazy amber orange with a medium frothy head. Aroma dry American hops, citrus. Dry bitter taste. Medium bodied. A bit more of it and it would be very nice. Not Bad.

Cloudy light orange beer. Thick, foamy head. Not a ton of aroma for how powerful the hops are, but what there is is citrusy and floral. Bitter and astringent. Sharp bitterness at the beginning that fades as the drink continues.
