The mikans used in this brew are fresh, succulent, and local -- harvested on the Heda land and by the hand of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san. The Baird brewers hand-process the harvested mikans, shaving off the outer skin of the peel and pressing the juice. Both peel shavings and juice are added to the brew at different stages of production. The mikans serve to add depth and complexity to an already sumptious ale; their role is to complement, not dominate. In addition to mikans, the 2009 Carpenter’s Mikan Ale incorporates a grain bill including Maris Otter pale ale malt, wheat malt, unmalted wheat and two types of Japanese sugar (sudakito and akato). The hopping schedule features cirtrusy Centennial and Cascade varieties including dry-hop additions to the conditioning tank. The combination of mikans and citrus hops provide an exquisitely complex yet balanced fruit character. The wonderful aromatics of this character waft gorgeously from the billowy white head that forms in the glass. Final transport to beer Nirvana comes courtesy of the tight and spritzy natural carbonation that works to keep you tastebuds fresh and alert.

Bottle @ home. A year old. Pours a hazy golden liquid. Aroma of malt, grain, herbs, grass, mandarin juice. Taste is dry, crisp, a little sticky and medium bitter. Flavors of grain, maltiness, some corn, grape fruit, mandarin and oranges, herbs. Finush has some pine, oramge peel, and pine resin. Lasting bitterness.

Pours a cloudy golden with a thin white head. The aroma is a bit lighter, consisting of mikan, wheat, grapefruit, and lemon. The mikan in the nose stand out most. The taste has quite a bit more bitterness than I was expecting. Equal grapefruit and mikan dominate. Underneath I find floral hops, wheat, and some mild cereal, and hints of spice. Long mikan aftertaste. This one is medium in body, with a slick texture, and is average in carbonation. I found this rather refreshing to drink.

Fules (1197) - Gyöngyös, HUNGARY - OCT 3, 2016
Kicsi, gyorsan eltűnő hab, borostyán szín. Enyhe, citrusos, fűszeres illat. Déligyümölcsös, citrusos, fűszeres ízek. Közepesen testes, enyhén keserű és szénsavas. Nem jött be.

330ml bottle pours a hazy golden color with sediments on the bottom of glass and a finger of white head on top leaving only a few spots of lacing. Aroma is oranges and orange zest with some herbal notes. Taste is an orange zest and citrus hop bitterness with a fruity and malty sweetness. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, a nicely hopped and tasty fruit beer that is quite enjoyable.

SeniorZozo (1843) - Budapest, HUNGARY - AUG 4, 2016 Tasting session @ Budapest. Aroma and taste is fruity and wheaty, lots of herbal and spicy notes going on, interesting.

33 cl bottle @ Timo A. Bottled on 23.10.2015.
Pours clear pale golden color with a small head. Aroma is herbal, some grain notes, mild citric tones, grass and pale malts. Flavor is orange and mandarin, some grassy notes, maybe corn tones and some juicy notes. Decent.

PanMarek (425) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 12, 2016
Citrus nose with a dank, hoppy finish and touches of malt. Taste is complex with a moderate hoppiness dominating. There is a touch of sour as well as citrus. Medium body and fizziness. Based on the description, I was expecting something much more challenging. The fruit notes are unusual but subtle. I had this from a bottle that may have been old. Would like to try on tap to compare.

330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Clear amber color. Small size, white head, disappears. Old cloth, yeasty, some malts, bit of burnt rubber in aroma. Acidic citrus, tart, spicy hops, grapefruit skins in taste. Grapefruit skins and peel in aftertaste. Medium fruity bitterness. Medium carbonation. Alcohol is hidden which is nice. Bit harsh to drink, but still drinkable.
