Scotland long has been one of the important centers of beer brewing. The cold climate has favored cultivation of the hardy barley plant in Scotland, while the relative paucity of sunshine has proved problematic for the growth of hop plants. Accordingly, Scottish Ales tend to be richly malty rather than zestily hoppy. Moreover, relatively cool ale fermentation temperatures result in brews that are not highly attenuated -- i.e. they remain rich in residual sugars and thus round and full-bodied in flavor. Noted beer writer, Roger Protz, calls Scottish Ales, "a kind of liquid version of porridge." Baird Yabai-Yabai Strong Scotch Ale 2006 (ABV approximately 6.5%) is, in a word, rich! It is liquid opulence that verges on decadence. Its deep mahogany color and creamy tan head immediately conjure images of northern country fall foliage. The warming effect begins in the nose, with the wafting of soft fruit esters and warm fusel alcohols. As the aroma dovetails into the flavor, notes of molasses, caramel apples, rum cake and maple syrup perform a fall festival on the palate. Just as a chewy malt sweetness blankets the mouth, however, it is pealed back by the ethereal pull of a vinous character reminiscent of port or sherry. One fulsome pint is enough to take the bite out of the evening autumn chill. Two pints will leave you toastily, and blissfully, warm. Three pints and. YABAI!

Bottle, 12C. Clear dark brown with a dense beige head that lasts OK. Avoided the fair amount of sediment. Fat malty aroma with layers of caramel and stewed fruit, dried banana. 7+ Full bodied, a mite chewy. Lowish carbonation is good for this sort of thing. Fairly sweet and dark Sherry-like but not over the top and with a bit of a lean towards dry at the end accompanied by pudding spices and gentle but insistent bitterness. I like the way its richly malty but various things lighten it on the palate to keep it a slow drinker rather than a sipper. Thoughtfully constructed and good.

Tap at Q-Brick (during the Strong Beer Days event). Thick malty nose, light roast and light spice. Very dark copper color, 1cm creamy off-white head. Mild roast matl initial, tangy fruit, berries, sugary in mid palate, all a bit muddled. Medium body. Pleasant with mild fruitiness. Doesnt seem particulary Scotch.

Interesting and not expected. Sweet malt aroma with hints of molasses. Good mahogany color with a tan head. Full and creamy body. Flavors are Scottish in nature and slightly sweet with candied fruit and a woody hint.

Bottle from Liquors Hasegawa. Poured into a snifter. Cloudy reddish brown color with a medium-sized off-white head. Nice caramel, sorghum, brown sugar notes on the nose with fig and prune notes also noticeable. Tastes of toasted malts and caramel with more of the fruit notes coming out as it warms up a bit. Also vanilla and cacao nib is noticeable after coming to room temperature. Malt forward, but still fairly balanced. Nice smooth finish.

Pours dark brown with a small head. Nose shows golden syrup, prunes, figs, brown sugar and port. Very rich and sweet-smelling. Flavours are not as sweet as the aroma would suggest. Toasty malt, a bit of brown sugar, soft booze and figs. Very low carbonation, could be higher.

Draught at Bungalow. Deep ruby, small off-white head. Nutty aroma with some raisin. Flavour is nutty with cocoa and slight coffee notes. Very enjoyable.

Nice white head, deep brown poor. Tasty caramel and toasty malts straight up with just a nice fruit cake flavor lingering in the back ground. Interesting, tasty but not one of the best scotch ales Ive ever had but hit the spot on a slightly miserable day.
