Pours a golden color. Smell is of malts, some sweetness. Taste is a pleasant surprise, malty, a bit of hops, more flavor than expected at this price point. Overall a good value for the dollar.

The "grandfather" of blonde ales..truly great, though it has been made with lesser quality ingredients the last few years it still retains much of its greatness.best tasting blonde ale ive ever had.great aroma and mouthfeel with just the right hop bite.

Golden color outfox bottle with nice white head. Aroma is bread and malt. Taste follows nose. No real bitterness. Mild comes to mind but enjoyable.

I remember this one from my past. Certainly have no interest in trying it again but my memory is clear enough to rate it even though it has been almost 40 years. This is swill plain and simple.

(bottle). My pick during party prep for Tommys graduation as a no-nonsense thirst cutter. My guess is the original recipe was better by not using low-cost ingredients. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I tried this for one reason and one reason only, my grand father. I was told over and over as a kid that my grand father only drank one beer, Ballantine Ale. I read more than a few bad reviews but I have to put myself in the its not that bad category. If you understand what youre buying you cant expect a world class craft beer. For what it is its alright. I poured mine from a 12oz can into my Dogfish Head IPA glass. I detected almost no hop aroma and while some reviews claim a slight flash of hops at the finish my pallet was straining to detect the same. Mostly it was sweet, with distinct presence of corn, overall bread and hay. I had none of the skunkiness or bad odors others cited and would buy it again.

12 ounce bottle. Medium gold color topped by a small creamy white head. Grainy malt nose. Sweet grainy malt flavor upfront. Some metallic notes. Thin bodied with a slight citrus hop character in finish.

DATE REVIEWED: August 9, 2014... GLASSWARE: Baltika stange... OCCASION: Sharknado with Matt, Jer and Shan--a win!...APPEARANCE: cler golden yellow body; bubbles are consistent; crisp white head that spreads upward with cirrus wisps; smeary lacing... AROMA: funky tin malts--as expected from a 40 oz. bottle--and some banana at the end--mostly wet pennies... PALATE: thin at first; beefy ending; gassy and slick; easy drinking otherwise... TASTE: lemony wheat grass; biscuity and toasted malts reign supreme in this otherwise thin profile...OVERALL: intrigued by its history--and ODBs proclivity for it, according to song--this 40 oz.er drinks easy and malty with a bit of refreshment to it--but it also is a bit thin and unimpressive in its refrigerated neighborhood, where OE 800 and Mickeys reside...

There are certain beers that have been around forever that Ive never actually drank (much less reviewed) until now - Ballantine XXX Ale being one of the most notable examples I can think of. This beer has always been lumped in with the cheap adjunct lagers at every beer store, bodega and corner shop in the country but its not a lager, or even a cream ale. It seems to be just a generic golden/blonde ale and it works as such. Its got a little flavor and its easy to drink and nice to look at thats passable, eh?

I poured a 12oz bottle into a mug. It had an expiration date of 6/29/15 and cost $1.95 ($0.16 per ounce).

Appearance: Pure golden color with crystal clarity and persistent effervescence. Pours to a two-finger, white, foamy head which laces and retains quite well.

Smell: Because it comes in a green bottle its quite skunky. Perhaps a faint trace of corn or lemony hops. Otherwise quite mild, but mostly inoffensive.

Taste: The palette of this brew would be best compared to an adjunct lager pils malt seems to dominate with a significant corny taste on the second half. Not much in the way of subtle or even distinctive flavors here, though I do find it to be remarkably sweet for the style. Hops are quite reserved, if theyre even noticeable at all. A mild palette indeed, but I will say theres nothing off-putting about it (which is impressive considering how old this bottle probably is). The skunky aroma does not carry over to the taste, and it finishes clean. I do like that minor sweetness through the middle. Id think with a little more hops and some specialty malt this could be quite good.

Drinkability: This beer was brewed to compete with lager, so its no surprise that it looks, smells and tastes like lager. It drinks a little better than your average fizzy yellow brew, though. Well carbonated to be sure, though the texture is a little softer and smoother no abrasive effervescence. At 4.85% ABV Ballantine XXX Ale is arguably sessionable, though Id need more flavor to want to do that with this beer.

Score: 6/10

Can: Poured a clear golden with lots of gushing carbonation. Head is white. Aroma is skunky, sweet grass. Taste is sweet corn, grass, and soggy cardboard.
