Dark brown pour with small beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, cocoa, peppers and chocolate. Taste of roasted malts, unsweetened chocolate, hint of coffee, some earthiness, charcoal, and a chili pepper hotness on the finish, also powdered cocoa on the finish. 22 oz bottle shared at Kan’s. Thanks! Pours a nice murky brownish pour, some lighter edges, with a decent frothy tannish brown head. Laces small. Aromas are some lighter cocoa, toffee, and toast, touches of roast and light peppery life. Initial is medium to lighter bodied, some moderate chili bite up front with some good earthy chiles, light cocoa, toffee, and roast. Some coffee, toast, and biscuits. The chiles take over a bit, moving into heat, pepper. A bit overwhelming. Warm finish. Interesting, not bad. A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger of tan head.
S: Really quite smokey with lots of earthy tones, so the chipotle is really coming through. Plenty of roasted malt and only a mild dark chocolate/cocoa aroma to it. Not really much sweetness.
T: I was surprised how much spice this beer had to it. A big kick of heat from the chipotle peppers which also impart a big time earthiness and smokiness to the beer. Moderately roasty with a more pronounced chocolate quality to them.
M: Medium in body and carbonation.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2015 October 5th, 2013 - Spicy chipotle sauce smell. Neat! Tastes like chipotle chilis too. Hard to drink. Like a porter with chipotle sauce drizzled in before the tasting.
April 15th, 2012 - The Black Marlin is a local favorite, showing up at parties and board game gatherings with a special frequency. It makes sense that Ballast Point would make an effort to put clever, curious twists on this beer in particular, both for its popularity, and because it’s a relatively open canvas on which to build sharp, and even crazy flavors. The appearance is much like the plain Black Marlin - a thin, light brown head makes a crescent around the edge of the glass, and the beer is a dark and hazy chocolate mud. On the nose I catch the scent of peppers, true, but also the salty, boozy and unique smell of reposed tequila. It’s a dry tanginess that I think is common to agave, but mostly uncommon to the average American. The flavor shares this Mexican tanginess, beginning with the vinegars common to certain, regional barbecue sauces, which calms and quiets itself until the flavor has a deep, roiling smokiness, lent to it both by the malt but also the chipotle. Then suddenly the aftertaste kicks the drinker hard with a dry charcoal and chili powder kick. As I write the notes, I am coughing and sputtering at the end of each sip, and eventually have to leave the remainder in the glass. Pepper lovers should give this brew a try. Have an aversion to measuring the scovilles of your beer? Tread carefully!

Balast point chipotle black marlin porter. 22oz bottle thanks to
tim!... Pours a medium cola brown pour with lighter edges and a thin
film of light beige head... Peppery odiferousness with a sharpness to
it. Overpowers everything else.. flavors are predominantly focused on
the pepper nature which grasps, takes hold, and never leaves. Porter
qualities are left grabbing for a chance to appear but never really
let’s go. Thin to medium bodied. Overwhelmed by the amount of heat.

Tap at Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank, CA. Pours a opaque deep cola with red highlights. Nose at first is all roasted jalapeño then gains some licorice and cherry. Savory and rich. Big impending heat in the nose. Taste at first is ridiculously thin for porter, more brown ale. Licorice and anise bite at the beginning gets obliterated by hefty jalapeño that is powerful and lingering without any saving hop balance. Dark brown color, brown head. Sweet, malty, grainy scent. Malty, grainy taste. Grainy aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness.

Similar appearance to the regular Black Marlin porter. Dark brown, nearing black, with a thin beige cap. The aroma brings the pepper heat right away. The flavor has all of the characteristics found in the base beer, but these are overshadowed by spicy heat. A beer like this walks a fine line. How do you showcase the chipotle and retain a balanced, drinkable beer? A fun experiment and worth a try...once. A sample pour was all I needed. More than a few ounces would fatigue my palate rather hastily.
