Tap at Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank, CA. Pours a opaque deep cola with red highlights. Nose at first is all roasted jalapeño then gains some licorice and cherry. Savory and rich. Big impending heat in the nose. Taste at first is ridiculously thin for porter, more brown ale. Licorice and anise bite at the beginning gets obliterated by hefty jalapeño that is powerful and lingering without any saving hop balance. Harder to drink than Naga Chili Dorado DIPA.

My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts, lengthy chocolate, blackberries and chipotle heat are ably aligned in this well-balanced Porter.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the brown-hued black.
-Chocolate malt flavors are as long as the chipotle heat.
-The chipotle is not overdone, which I appreciate.
-Mouthfeel is leaner than I expected.

10oz snifter on tap at Neon’s, for $6. Very dark brown, near-black color. Thin light brown / khaki head. Good bits and short ropes of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Kind of a chewy, bigger texture. Lightly dry finish. Good bigger roast, dark malts, hint of coffee, good dark chocolate aroma. Pepper is much more subtle and well-integrated than expected. Much more balanced than habanero sculpin, works great with the rich, dark malt flavors of Marlin. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet. Good light peppery heat creeps up on you in the finish, but it’s more of a warm hug on the palate than a peppery kick. Up front, the pepper backs off enough to let the dark chocolate and roast malt flavors shine. Definitely the best pepper porter I’ve had yet, much better than expected.

Draft. Dark brown beer with a tan head. Smoky aroma with light roasted peppers. Spicy peppery flavor with light cocoa. Medium bodied. Spicy peppers linger with malt and light cocoa.

On tap at Ballast Point (Scripts Ranch Location). Pours with a near black hued body with a small tan head. Aromas are intensely smokey, strong chipotle, earthy, dusty cocoa, bloody mary, earthy spice. Flavors show a moderate peppery heat presence, chipotle, smokey, earthy, nutty, spice, cocoa. Medium bubbles with a fuller body and a mild heat. That said, its not the easiest beer to drink.

Présence d’un mince col beige mousseux et d’une fine dentelle le verre. Saveur: Léger goût de chocolat et de céréale grillée. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement onctueuse. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Légère présence de piment chipotle en arrière goût. (Rating #5525)

22 oz bottle shared at Kan’s. Thanks! Pours a nice murky brownish pour, some lighter edges, with a decent frothy tannish brown head. Laces small. Aromas are some lighter cocoa, toffee, and toast, touches of roast and light peppery life. Initial is medium to lighter bodied, some moderate chili bite up front with some good earthy chiles, light cocoa, toffee, and roast. Some coffee, toast, and biscuits. The chiles take over a bit, moving into heat, pepper. A bit overwhelming. Warm finish. Interesting, not bad. But the peppers really take a dominant hold and is a bit harsh/not as well integrated as hoped for.

Dark brown color. Huge cocoa, chilli notes in the nose with a touch of tobacco. The mouth is malty, fairly dry, lots of chilli and chocolate. Spicy cacao finish. Very nice and I like this experiment.

Black with a fizzy head. Roasted grain and subtle pepper aroma. Chocolate and sweet roasted grain up front with a pepper heat on the back end. Pretty good.
