Aroma: fruity chili, soft roast, chocolate.
Taste: chili, salmiak, roasted, peppery, chocolate.

UPDATED: JAN 23, 2011 Growler of Chipotle Cocoa Black Marlin. Pours dark with a nice light tan creamy head. Nose is chocolaty with waves of chipotle smokiness in the background...it took me a while to find the smokiness for whatever reason, but after about 6 or 7 ounces, it certainly comes to the forefront of the nose. Flavors are much more concentrated on the cocoa aspect than the smokiness of the chipotles, which is kind of a letdown, but the capsicum heat is certainly present, which is good..in fact, this is a nicely spicy beer and you definitely feel that heat for a good time afterwards. Mouthfeel is on the medium to thin side of the spectrum.. I really like the heat here but I just wish it was more smokey because it really just isnt as smokey as it needs to be. On tap takeover at Cole’s in Buffalo. Dark pour with slight head only. Aroma is spicy. Taste is crazy hot and doesn’t go away quickly. The heat burns and lingers but is oddly appealing.

Tap at Stagshead as part of flight of bizarre flavored beers I designed. Pours nice brown but with chili burn on nose. Tastes of cocoa, anise, smoke, cola, and lots of chipotle chili. Normally chipotles aren’t this hot but more smoky and this could be a touch more subdued with heat for me. Lots of flavors though and cleared sinuses. Roasted malts, lengthy chocolate, blackberries and chipotle heat are ably aligned in this well-balanced Porter.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the brown-hued black.
-Chocolate malt flavors are as long as the chipotle heat.
-The chipotle is not overdone, which I appreciate.
-Mouthfeel is leaner than I expected.

Keg at the Ballast Point taproom - San Diego. Pours rich black-brown with a frothy tan head. Good chili kick in this one, balanced by dry, bittersweet baking cocoa. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lingering semi-dark chocolate finish, chili punch, some burnt earth. Solid.
