April 15th, 2012 - The Black Marlin is a local favorite, showing up at parties and board game gatherings with a special frequency. It makes sense that Ballast Point would make an effort to put clever, curious twists on this beer in particular, both for its popularity, and because it’s a relatively open canvas on which to build sharp, and even crazy flavors. The appearance is much like the plain Black Marlin - a thin, light brown head makes a crescent around the edge of the glass, and the beer is a dark and hazy chocolate mud. On the nose I catch the scent of peppers, true, but also the salty, boozy and unique smell of reposed tequila. It’s a dry tanginess that I think is common to agave, but mostly uncommon to the average American. The flavor shares this Mexican tanginess, beginning with the vinegars common to certain, regional barbecue sauces, which calms and quiets itself until the flavor has a deep, roiling smokiness, lent to it both by the malt but also the chipotle. Then suddenly the aftertaste kicks the drinker hard with a dry charcoal and chili powder kick. As I write the notes, I am coughing and sputtering at the end of each sip, and eventually have to leave the remainder in the glass. Pepper lovers should give this brew a try. A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, light sweet chocolate malt with light chalky character, light coffee, nice. Draft @ Bishops Arms Gustav, Malmö. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty spicy chocolate and chipotle aroma. Roasted malty spicy chocolate and chipotle peppers flavor. Has a roasted malty spicy chili and chocolate finish with hints of caramel.

10oz snifter on tap at Neon’s, for $6. Very dark brown, near-black color. Thin light brown / khaki head. Good bits and short ropes of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Kind of a chewy, bigger texture. Lightly dry finish. Good bigger roast, dark malts, hint of coffee, good dark chocolate aroma. Pepper is much more subtle and well-integrated than expected. Much more balanced than habanero sculpin, works great with the rich, dark malt flavors of Marlin. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet. Good light peppery heat creeps up on you in the finish, but it’s more of a warm hug on the palate than a peppery kick. Up front, the pepper backs off enough to let the dark chocolate and roast malt flavors shine. Definitely the best pepper porter I’ve had yet, much better than expected. Tap at Stagshead as part of flight of bizarre flavored beers I designed. Pours nice brown but with chili burn on nose. Tastes of cocoa, anise, smoke, cola, and lots of chipotle chili. Normally chipotles aren’t this hot but more smoky and this could be a touch more subdued with heat for me. Lots of flavors though and cleared sinuses.
