Lager meets IPA in a winning combination.

Our Fathom India Pale Lager combines time-honored lagering techniques with the hop profiles of a West Coast IPA recipe. The cold-fermenting lager yeast provides a clean base that allows the citrus and pine aromas from the hops to really shine. The result is a gold medal beer with a refreshing, easy drinking character and just the right amount of depth.

Tap at Ballast Point. The beer pours to a glowing golden body with a white head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity. Flavor is bitter hops with a dash of sulfur. Lots of grains like an artisan bread. The palate is bitter and medium bodied.

Bottle at tasting. Golden pour. Aroma of citrus and malt. Taste has citrus, peach, malt and that typical lager yeast sweetness. Meh.

On a flight at the Ballast Point place in Temecula, California on 9th Feb 2017. Golden amber pour, white head. Citrus notes ruled the nose and flavour, light piney hops almost getting through, but not quite making it. Refreshing enough, but too citrusy for me, even if it was in fact fairly sweet.

Can. Pours hazy straw with airy white head. Clear aroma of hops and grass, with estery notes. Bitter, hoppy flavour with sweet notes of fruit and malt and pastorianus notes Bitter and estery aftertaste. Good.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2016 Can, 7.0%. Distinct grapefruit aroma, slightly perfumy. Hazy dark golden colour. Very big stable creamy white head. The flavour starts off with a good grapefruit note. Then comes a good bitterness along with a nice malt note. Late spicy hoppiness. Powerful but fairly clean. And tastes good, by the way.

I was a bit hesitant about drinking Fathom at Ballast Point since it’s fairly easy to get elsewhere, but having it fresh on tap was a treat. Clear gold-amber appearance. Hugely fresh and tropical nose. Mango, lemon, grapefruit, peach, tangerine, guava, and melon. Flavor showcases juicy, bittersweet fruitiness and some biscuit malt. It’s hop-forward but the malt provides enough of counter balance to make this crisp and satisfying. Dry, chewy, and resinous feel. One of the better IPL’s I’ve ever tried.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phrom Phong. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is grassy citrus hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a fresh grassy yeast fruity woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark gold color with a nice laced head. Malt and hops spring from the aroma. Slight dry flavor with some hops in the background. Very crisp with that IPA lingering. Solid brew.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2016 Draft at The Irish Pol. Mostly clear deep golden orange pour with soapy off-white foam. Lots of messy lace. Wet tropical citrus hop resins with medium caramel malts. Tangelos. Scallions. Persimmons. Yellow apples. Palm fronds. Band-Aid nose. Musty bitter taste. Not a fan.
