Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2016 355 ml bottle. Almost clear golden body with a nice off-white head. Aroma has light malt, some caramel and green pepper with citric fruit in the background. Flavor is light malt and caramel with some citric and pepper, after a little while the hot habanero kicks in make the whole thing a bit unbalanced. Balanced in body and mostly hot & spicy in aftertaste. Not fantastic, more like a novelty but still pretty nice somehow.

On tap at Apex - pours light amber with an off-white head. The aroma has grapefruit, toast and is smooth and dry. It has a medium / full body that is still pretty crisp with semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with toasty malt, grapefruit, some pepper meat and a bit of paper. The finish has lots of peppery heat and hops. Pretty nice for what it is.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Tried a sampler glass full of this. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is a combination of habanero pepper and west coast hops, laid upon a malt backbone. Taste is spicy. The habanero does overpower the hops, but by just enough to make the beer interesting. This isn’t something to repeat or even drink an entire glass of, but it is an interesting example of what can be done with the combination of beer and spice.

Orange, loose white foam. Smells nicely sweet, with some vegetal aromas and some pine. Taste is some caramel, some pine and citrus, and some nice heat. Not overbearing, but pretty warm.

On cask at the PP Carlsbad Real Ale fest. It pours orange with a cream colored head. The aroma is nice with the peppers only playing a minor part to the fresh citrusy hops. The flavor is all dominated by hot peppers. There is some citrus notes in there as it burns your throat on the way down. Its actually a pretty cool beer, but I can’t help but feel like the pepper ruins a classic IPA.

Strong grapefruit and tangerine nose, with a subtle pepper presence. Hazy amber, medium yellow head. Grapefruit, lemon, and a lot of pepper. Pine finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation, hot. Not quaffable, but a fantastic sipper.

Draft at DryHop. Orange with white head. Very spicy beer. Way more than I thought. Tasty tho if you can fight that off

12oz bottle. I expected the heat to be mild, subdued. Nope, this is pretty hardcore. Filtered orange-tan body. Frothy white head. Interesting mix between cool citurs hops and fruity hot pepper aroma. A pretty awesome beer experience. The heat really lingers and stains your palate. Bold offering.

Bottle in Seattle. Gold rich gold. Interesting aroma of dense citrus fruit, rich hops and a touch of the pulp of the pepper. Aroma changes from typical Sculpin in to some wild guava and papaya. Pepper is bright and clear, quite hot, but it admittedly plays well with the fruity IPA. Not my favorite flavors, nor something I’ll be reaching for again, but it does like good spicy food make me want to take another bite (sip) even when I don’t understand why. Interesting variation for sure

Nice crisp copper and light bronzed body with a thinnish pale tan head. Aroma of fresh hops, pine, grass, fruit and a bunch of chiles. Medium-bodied; Big pine and citrus notes in the hops with a large malt presence and an immediate hit of the pungent peppers in here with a pleasant warmth and good balance by the hops and malt. Aftertaste shows a distinct amalgamation of flavours from sweet apricots to pungent grass and herbs of the hops to a little malt backbone and of course the ever-present chile. Overall, a very well balanced and well crafted beer that hits all the right angles without being gimmicky - this is a West Coast IPA with chiles and it works out better than you think it will! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle after a hockey game in Arlington, Virginia on 03-June-2015 - Thanks JP!
