Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Tap @ Taphouse Boise. Ordered the 4 oz taster, arrived a golden orange color with a small creamy beige head. The nose is outstanding. In fact this may be the best smelling IPA I can remember to date. Juicy grapefruit, citrus, and tropical fruit. Rich sweet, sour, and tangy. No hint of the heat yet, but its on the way. Taste is moderate bitters and a light sweetness more malty than expected. The heat arrives on the back end and lingers a bit. Really a solid brew, boarder line outstanding. One is probably enough at one time; next time Ill get a full pint.

SWBF 2014. Pours peach with a lacy white head. Aromas of peach, honey, grapefruit, kiwi with some hints of a peppery tone. Quite similar to ordinary Sculpin. Tasting it also very much reminds of the usual Sculpin characteristics: fantastic tropical fruit tones - mango, peach, paricot, grapefruit - and that nice malty base to it. After swallowing it though - wow! What a kick! Quite fiery and burns not a little bit. Not too much though. Very well balanced and I quite like that habanero kick!

Excellent beer, tho I like the Grapefruit version more. This does have the very intriguing aroma with the fruity hop malt caramel thing. Flavor loses almost all of the fruit and gets fairly dry with mostly malty hop and a little capsicum taste. Body is great and the heat from the Habenero is just right. Good drinking brew.

Bottle 355ml. Pours golden with low off-white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of peppers, slight malt. Taste is of peppers, hot (extreme) peppers, very slight malt. Palate: Medium carbonation. Medium body [Note that I had a very hard time rating the palate as I could barely dare to take other sips]. Overall: This beer is straight-up gross. Extremely hot/peppery. This is not serious. Burning aftertaste. No complexity to speak of. Stear clear of this one.

Keg at BD AGM. Golden with white head. Citrus hoppy aroma, Sculpin aroma. Tastes like regular Sculpin, citrusy. This beer has a punishing burn that doesnt quit. Burned me all the way down the throat

Keg at Brewdog Edinburgh. Pours almost clear amber. Nose is sweet fruits, green pepper. Taste is green pepper, sweet malts and then the chili builds up and its all about that. Quite, or I could say really, strong chili in a beer, overpowering the excellent ipa. I dont see the point of this. There are nice balanced chili beers, this is not one of those.

12oz bottle from Craftshack. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a small foamy white head. Aroma of sweet citrus, light on the habanero spice, lemon zest, and floral hops. Taste of grapefruit, lemon, pine, and a decent peppery habanero burn in the finish. Solid

Tulip at Tonys dart away. Good aroma, sweet. Minor pepper. Citrus, orange, grapefruit. Clean golden orange color. Small head that faded quick. Bitter flavor. Medium body, smooth oily creamy mouthfeel. Bitter dry finish. Better that I was anticipating. Heat is good. Not overwhelming. Enjoyable. Finish is my favorite part.

Delicious spicy beer. I love spicy food and jump at the opportunity to try hot pepper beers. Usually they disappoint but Sculpin was perfect. Aroma was mostly grapefruit, orange and just a hint of fresh picked peppers. Pour was a nice medium gold with a one finger white head. Taste was as good as the regular Sculpin. Big hop flavors on the front with all the citrus fruit and almost oniony. The big surprise comes right after the swallow. A big bellowing habanero heat on the cheeks and throat. Fantastic example of how spicy a beer can be. Nice carbonation as well.
