COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Sample at Khyber with Vin, Pat and Janine. Poured a clean gold with average white head and lacing. Aroma of citrus and piney hops with mild pepper aromas. Really interesting drink. Sweet malts hit you at first, then really fresh habaneros, with a slightly bitter hoppy pine and citrus finish. The pepper taste is strong but I didn’t find the heat as off-putting as others. Interesting drink but I think the sample was enough for me.

Tap. Pours clear amber with a large light beige head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, light chili, pine. Flavor is habanero dominated, some hoppy notes, lightly sweet, light bitter, medium heat. Burning finish. Interesting, but regular sculpin is so much better.

On tap at Hunah Day. nose is mostly straight sculpin, hop explosion with a faint spice to it. Taste is much more spicy, extremely peppery and hot in the finish with the juicy hops up front. Spice is so strong and lingers.

On tap at Apex - pours light amber with an off-white head. The aroma has grapefruit, toast and is smooth and dry. It has a medium / full body that is still pretty crisp with semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with toasty malt, grapefruit, some pepper meat and a bit of paper. The finish has lots of peppery heat and hops. Pretty nice for what it is.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Virginia Beach, VA. Dark orange pour with a frothy off-white head. Tropical fruit and grapefruit rind aroma. Since there is no hint of heat in the aroma the first taste is a shock with spicy heat overwhelming the faint mango, tangerine, and grapefruit in the background. Heat lingers on the palate. If you enjoy spicy beers this is done very well but I am not a big fan of spicy foods in general so I am not likely to revisit this one.

On Tap slightly hazy lightorange. Thin wispy head and lacing. LIght citrusy aroma with only a hint of the firey inferno to come. Flavor was very hot. B ig time peppery heat and still some nice clean grapefruit citrus in there as well.

Bouteille, merci à Dave - Ibrew2or3 for the trade.

This is an extremely hard beer to rate. I’ve basically never seen a less "balanced" beer -- this one is completely and entirely dominated by the habanero. And that’s where the difficulty comes in. If you like hot, spicy beers, this one will really deliver. I personally found that it was delicious and well-made, but close to undrinkable from how hot it was. This is definitely a great beer, but six months later I’ve still got two more sitting in my fridge because I’m too scared to drink them!

Mostly get that west coast tropical hops on the nose with a hint of the pepper. In the taste up front you get the Sculpin but the back end into the throat and aftertaste habanero heat. The heat certainly makes you slow it down. Wife really liked this one.

Provided a nice balance between the warmth from the habanero and the crispness of a good IPA.
