Ballast Point Homework Series Batch #1 - Hoppy Red Ale

RATINGS: 41   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.67/5   SEASONAL: Series   IBU: 65   EST. CALORIES: 210   ABV: 7%
Dubbed The Homework Series, the beers will be developed by brewers operating the aforementioned pilot system. The first batch of those brews is an India Red Alea hoppy 7% ABV beer given additional character and nice balance by substantial caramel maltswhich Chandler pulled from his personal homebrew archives.

A Hybrid-Style Ale with a rich, Oktoberfest inspired malt base and a slamming hop profile, very similar to an India Pale Ale. CTZ (Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus) hops are added to the boil for bitterness, and copious amounts of Centennial hops are added during the late kettle hop addition and dry hopping post fermentation. In the Great American Beer Festival Style Guidelines there is a gap between the American-Style Amber/Red Ale and Imperial Red Ale. This beer fills this gap, whether you call it a Hoppy Red Ale or an India Red Ale, one thing is for sureyou will call it good.

Rich toasted malt and chocolate aromas with a light vegetal component. Clear red/orange/copper color with a thin but persistent white head. The roasted and sweet malt flavor and strong earthy/pithy hop bit hit strong and simultaneously. Caramel and butterscotch sweetness coat the tongue with a creamy consistency and are quickly washed away by the powerful hop bitterness with an aftertaste of grapefruit and apricot. The alcohol shows through clearly and helps elevate all the flavors. Lasting bitterness and woody dryness. Nothing here is out of balance or out of place. One of the best red ales Ive ever had.

Aroma: pine, citrus, caramel, toast. Appearance: Amber with moderate off white head. Taste: Like an IPA, substantial hoppy bitterness with some sweeter notes on the back end. Palate: Medium bodied and a little oily. Overall: Love! Everything good about an IPA with some malty toasty elements of an amber.

Distinct aromatics of orange and tea. Slight bitters while being very light on the tongue

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Fragrant aroma that delivers a heaping serving of fresh green hops that suggest pine and citrus while chances of rye like malts lurk in the distance. Appearance was a deep amber red with a orange tinted transparency along the edges. Head developed thick and fluffy at first but eventually crawled downwards and left a standard layer of foam. The drink is a combination of flavors that bring about bitter almost salty like tastes across my tongue yet levels of semi sweet malts round the body out. This beer is well crafted and holds a sturdy structure with just the right dosage of flavorings of malt and hop mixture. Good fair price which means this should sell through fast.

Bomber from Beverages for Less, Santee. Pours a crisp amber-red, very clean to look at, perfect amount of carbonation, with off white bubbles just sitting in a 1/5 of a finger on top of the liquid. Sweet cinnamon notes in the nose, saccharin sugary malts predominate. There is a dank resinous quality that I catch on a second whiff... must be the hops? Taste is strong, good, clean... lots of cara coming through, of course, but overall just a good clean, strong beer. At first is reminds of some Lagunitas beers, but this one has more crispness and balance than Ive ever picked up on with Lagunitas. Really, really impressive. To those who rated this low... Ummm... what? So good. Finishes with a medium mouthfeel... nice long finish. Good times.

Pours a copper amber with a one finger off white head which fades to nice lacing. Aroma is of resiny pine, citrus, sweet bready malts, caramel, toasted malts, and some tofffee. Taste Is hoppy up front with a lit of pine, citrus (grapefruit) and grassy hops, and the there are some nice caramel, sweet malts, toffee, and bread pudding notes to balance out the hop. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, moderately bitter, long finish. Overall, a very nice amber that shows off Ballast Points strong homebrew origins.

pours dark reddish mahogany with a thin tan head. aroma is sweet malt with a touch of earthy hops. flavor is extremely balanced and smooth. stars with a nice hoppy kick at the front then eases into the caramel/toffee malt finish, but neither is overpowering. smooth and easy drinking. great beer.

"Oddly spicily hopped and malted...lots going on, some working together, some solo, some flavors seemingly pitted againts each other, but what you end with works. Not a lot to compare this too, even in the style. The only real flaw is the abv shows a bit, but it was definitely enjoyed."

Pours deep copper with a small off white head. The nose is spivey, caramel, pine and love. Haha Jk. The taste is is high sweet and medium bitter. The texture is crisp and clean, body is medium and finish is long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
