Tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad barrel event. Aroma of spoiled berries, tastes like a snake bite from my days in merry old England. brokensail (16609) - Dublin, California, USA - MAY 13, 2010
A: A brown beer with plenty of blood red notes to it and a noticeable absence of head.
S: A mix of sweet and sour currants in the nose with a bit of oak and just a touch of vinegar to go along with the lactic notes.
T: Not an overpowering sour by any means, but a nice lactic acidity, mild vinegar, and plenty of currants. The fruit skins really help to dry the beer out and provide a bit of depth.
M: A light bodied beer with a mild but tingly carbonation and a dry finish.
D: Not anything that will change the world, but a really easy drinking and refreshing sour beer. Lubiere (14110) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 6, 2009
A turbid dark lambic with reddish hues, thin off white head. A nice light horseblanket aroma, a bit of dark fruits. In mouth, more sweetness than in the cherry hout, veering on grape juice, light lactic notes, yogourt sourness. On tap at Ballast Point 13 Anniv. Beer Festival , Oct. 24 2009. Hazy mahogany with a medium beige head. Sweet and sour aroma with roasted malt, caramel, lacto and black currants. Flavour was sour and dry with roasted malt, caramel, black currants, lacto, wood and acetone. Finished dry and burning sour. Lovely stuff. MartinT (10014) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 13, 2010
My Bottom Line:
3fourths (9351) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 28, 2010
Vinous black currant melodies serenade the tastebuds before raisins and citrusy tartness elevate this Sour Ale’s aftertaste.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the orange-hued brown.
-The smooth carbonation and fruity tartness make for easy drinking.
-The raisin-y malts underneath are a perfect match with the black currants and lactic bacteria.
-The red wine flavours within are very alluring.
On tap at their Linda Vista brewery.
bourbon, molasses and sour, sweaty socks in the nose. heavy bourbon and brown sugar presence. mildly acetic. filmy, pasty and thin texture. soured brown sugar lingers. currants, really? BMan1113VR (7931) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUL 19, 2010
On tap at Stone Sourfest. Pours with a brown body and a fading head. Aroma of wood, tart, currants and perfume. Taste is sour, acidic, funk, fruit, vinegar and very earthy. Dry and acidic mouthfeel. JohnnyJ (5570) - San Diego, California, USA - APR 20, 2010
On tap at Stone Oakquinox 2010. Pours a reddish brown off-white head. Berries, currant, lightly sweet malt, and tart fruit. It’s okay, but doesn’t hold its ground against other sours. Dickinsonbeer (5074) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - APR 22, 2010
Tap at Rattle N Hum for the Ballast Point Promo night with Joe and Zach. Pours a deep violet brown hazy with thin filmy head. Aroma is black currant jam, earth, woody, funk, aceto and a light caramelized malty tone. Flavor is woody, earth tones, oak, dirt, funk light horsey brett lots of pedio and modest aceto mineral and slight wet dog hair. reminds me a touch of Iron Hill cassis lambic but not quite as sharp with aceto, and this BP had a touch less fruit, but still quite good in the fruit dept. This one may be developing fast, since its older lower ratings. I thought it was pretty damn good. WeeHeavySD (3387) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 29, 2009
1st rating, tap @ Belgian Fest 2009. Porus reddish with a pink head. Nose is sweet with almost a beet quality, taste is sweet and fruity and tart, overall tasty but the fruit is overall a bit overwhelming.
