COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The idea started as a San Diego Farmhouse Ale using local ingredients. We wondered what the Kumeyaay Indian’s were eating when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo climbed out of his flagship boat, the San Salvador, and onto the shore of Ballast Point in 1542. Also, what might have Cabrillo stocked on his boat before he left Acapulco (then called Navidad) 3 1/2 months earlier? So with some research we tracked down a fun mix of ingredients for a Belgian inspired San Diego indigenous Ale.

With some help from our friends at The Linkery, North Park Native Plants and Wingshadow’s Farm we were able to track down ingredients like corn, pine nuts, agave, elder flower, white sage, manzanita berries, curacao and local sage honey. The malt bill consisted of Belgian pale malt, caramunich, biscuit, wheat and corn. The result is a 7.5% ABV, brown beer that really has to be tasted to be understood. It tastes like the San Diego countryside.

Pours an amber color with a white head. Herbal aroma of sage and elderberry with a nice malt sweetness. A hint of lemon, some white pepper, and a hint of yeast. The flavor is really dominated by the sage. A nice sweetness from it which pairs nicely with a bready sweetness, some citrus, and yeast. A light pepper note, a bit of berry, and a light tartness on the finish.

Really cool and unique herbal mix here. The aroma and flavor both pop, and the combo of farmhouse yeast, herbs and dark malts works well.

Draught at Aces & Ales, Las Vegas, 6.9% ABV
Dark brown color; creamy head. Some cinnamon aroma. Sweetish caramel flavor, some cinnamon again, some sweet liquorice; ordinary bitterness.
Really?

Draught at TND: Complex aroma of malt, sage, honey, and spices. Aroma is too complex. Poured deep amber/orange in color with a small, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Slightly hazy. Sparkling. Very complex flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of lemon/lime, malt, spices, cinnamon, cardamom, light candi sugar, simple syrup, and sprite. Medium body. Lively to average carbonation. Malt, candi sugar, spice, lemon/lime finish. 7.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Sampled on tap at Pinocchio’s. Dark amber pour...it smells like Listerine. A sip...man, it tastes like Listerine. Spiced and medicinal. A saison? Whatever. It’s awful. Reminds me of 3F Rabid Rabbit, or whatever it’s called. Truly awful.

Clear golden with a fizzy white head. Cardamom cinnamon spice and alcohol aroma. Tastes of caramel spice and apple with a lightly dry finish.

Draft. Dark amberish color, off-white head. Sweet malt, lots of spice and herbs going on in this beer, fruit, some grass, and grain. The beer is quite different with spiced, almost too much spice for my taste.

Draught from rattle and hum. Poured an orangey hue. Some fruits etc. Ok not super amazing.

Pours a lightly hazed tea leaf brown with a small bubbly off white head. Some clove spice and fruit esters dominated both aroma and flavor.
