San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

I was assured this bottle is fresh from the brewery in the last couple weeks. I will take their word for it, as the brewery does not believe this is information which is pertinent to pass on. A: Copper with a finger of white foam over an ale with excellent clarity. The cap falls to a ring and central dome in a minute or so leaving behind soapy spots of lace. S: Tropical fruits, grapefruit, some resin. Sweet malts and hints of cotton candy. Im surprised at how sweet this smells actually. T: Again, sweet. Im getting a interesting cherry ice cream flavor; which I really dig. Theres a good amount of the tropical fruit still going on here - some mango and pineapple. M: Medium bodied with moderate carb and a semi slick finish. O: Really a nice IPA. I like the limited ABV (relatively), and the ability to pack a substantially sexy amount of hops in the beer. A really complex and intriguing hop presence with layers of flavors. This was worth seeking. Serving type: bottle 12-24-2011

Magnifique mousse assez durable. Bravo!

Draft: pours an orangish copper color with a nice white head. Aroma is floral and citrusy. The taste is full... Pine and grapefruit... This is nice, tropical and fruity. One of my favorite IPAs for sure.

A very well made west coast IPA with a clean finish. This is definitely a floral IPA with more of a citrus aroma than pine cone, similar to a better tasting Bridgeport IPA. However, the palate is a little empty leading a finish that leaves you wanting for something more. This makes for a good sessionable IPA although the ABV is a little high (and the ABV is masked very well!). While not an epic beer, I would definitely recommend this beer for casual drinking or a sample if you havent had it before.

On draft. Oh my. Weenie yellow color, but rich lacing. Flavor is of reduced blood orange, sweet, tart, rich and quick. No malts to speak of. Sweet OJ finish. Wow.

355ml bottle into a tulip glass; served cold. Aroma: Lots of grapefruit and lemony hops. Zesty and bright for sure. Appearance: Clear, amber-yellow body with a dissipating white head. Nice lacing, though! Taste: Loads of citrusy hops with just a little bit of pine/resin bite. Malt is pretty mild; this one is all hop. Palate: Medium body, moderate prickly carbonation, and a long bitter finish. Overall: A very, very nice IPA. Great hop-forward beer, classic west-coast flavors.

Botlle - clear gold - effervescent, lively pour - certainly my kind of IPA - clean, lean malts that are semi-sweet but ligh and crisp, allowing the hop flavor and bitterness to shine - strong bitterness and complex tropical fruit notes - finish is bright, peppery, spicy - overall a solid IPA, but not entirely worth its huge reputation.
