San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

I’m new to the ipa’s and enjoy their bite. My ratings will reflect that inexperience.

Bottle (22 ounce): Clear, golden with a hint of copper and a thick head. Huge lift of fresh hops. Lantana, citrus, pine. Very fresh. Green but rich.. Dry to off dry. Medium to medium high bitterness. Not sour. Rich, very fresh. Great weight and length. Bitterness is balanced by flavor. Tropical, citrus, pine hop flavors with malt to match. Intense west coast IPA but as balanced as they come. Intense but lovely beer.

Aroma is pineapple peach hops. Looks refreshing with a nice tight head. This beer is amazing! Great hop flavor though not super bitter. I will drink this again for sure.

Pours a cloudy orange with an average head that left some lacing. Wonderful aromas of grapefruit, peach and other citrus, as well as pine. Great balance sweet citrus and bitter hops. A great beer, deserving of its reputation.

Bottle poured into s shaker. Pours a lightly cloudy dark orange with 2 fingers of thick, frothy white head. Aroma of orange citrus with a hint of grapefruit. Taste is medium-heavy bitter. Loads of citrus and grapefruit. Just a hint of biscuity malt to balance it out. Full bodied with a slick texture. Lively carbonation and a super long finish. Overall, awesome. This one lives up to the hype.

Actually, I give this 3 and a half stars. It has a blonde, light copper hue. Billowy head. Hoppy. I can detect the malts. There is a wave of hops that plays with the citrus sensisbility in the taste. Absolutely delicious. In my opinion I think the hops should have been brought down a bit more. This is definitely a fine beer for early summer, the first rite of spring or pack it on a fishing trip with the bros. Good but not great.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2014 Pours a clear golden brew with a médium white head with regular retention, aroma is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with tropical fruits (mostly passionfruit), citrics (lemon, Orange and grapefruit), some pine and caramel, médium bodied, flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a bitter finish, long aftertaste; delicious world class ipa

erickok (6036) - Leuven, BELGIUM - JAN 2, 2014
Golden body, stable head. Fresh herbal and floral hops mixed with resiny aromas. Perfect looks for an ipa, no complaints there, and the body is solid too, okay fizz. Enough biscuity malt to back up the smooth yet present bitterness. Nice one for sure! (On tap at Blind Tiger)

AbbeyRoade (562) - Missouri, USA - JAN 2, 2014
Nice specimen. Almost a bit pale but very happy and a bit floral/piney as well. Mild bitterness.
