San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2013 Very nice aroma. Fruity hops. Some grapefruit and even a mango or nectarine aroma. Prob my favorite aroma of an ipa yet. Wish there was a bit more of the aroma in the taste. It is there but not as strong as the aroma. Malt level is well balanced. Slight bitter finish. Overall a great ipa. Like some things better than Heady Topper and some in heady topper more. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: Clear amber with finger thick off white head. Aroma: Mango, apricot, peach, grapefruit, biscuit, a hint of floral aromas and gentle pine hints. Taste: Low sweetness, medium bitterness and medium sourness. Palate: Smooth thin texture, light body and mouthfeel, average carbonation and slightly astringent. The finish is lingering with an initial fruit burst with apricot tartness that develops into a balanced bitterness. Comments: Delicious and left a glass lace.

On tap. A perfect deep gold with a thin white head. Huge floral nose, grass, pine straw, citrus. Balanced deep rich flavor and a wonderful long finish.

Lightly sweet malty body with highlights of biscuit and very light caramel. A musty earthen quality that was very pronounced as I drank this interspersed with Racer 5’. Bright exotic tropical fruit quality with a nice subtle grapefruit component.

Draft. I love that this beer comes across almost as an imperial IPA with big aromas of light citrus and tropical fruit, is mouth coating with deep hop character, yet somehow still somewhat light and refreshing. I expected it to be somewhat higher ABV and was pleased to see it come in at 7%.

Great IPA is an excellent dry, refreshing example of this style. Aroma and hoppiness fit the category perfectly.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden with long lasting white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of citrusy hops, biscuit malt and ripe fruit. Body is medium and crisp. Huge amount of citrusy, herbal hops dominate the palate with biscuit malt and ripe fruit provide some support. Finish is long and hoppy. Great IPA but hugely overpriced.

Great IPA, I had it several times, but just realized that I have never rated it. The aroma, the look, the taste, the aftertaste, all of them makes it an awesome IPA. If you are a hop head, 70 IBUs are over flowing! Well done Ballast Point.

UPDATED: SEP 18, 2013 Poured from a 12oz bottle to a tulip. Truly from the time you open the bottle Sculpin reveals itself as something special. The aroma bursts forth from the tulip. Citrus and stone fruit come to the fore. The earthy hops and even a tinge of cat pee funk linger underneath. Intriguing, this is absolutely one of the best smelling IPAS out there. The appearance is beautiful in it’s simplicity and clarity. Pours like a medium colored lager with a minimumal white head. The carbonation is light. The taste is an explosion of strong grapefruit and lemony citrus hops. The front of the tongue is awash in juicy hop flavor and bitterness. A mild rock candy like sweetness hits in mid swallow before the bitterness returns on the finish. Yowza! This brew really is a marvel! It is well deserved of the accolades heaped upon it. One nosing, one sip and one swallow and you’ll know you’re in for a game changer. I’m editing this review to reflect that in my area (Twin Cities) I can find this right at $9.99 a six pack. I’ve seen several post that call Sculpin pricey but here at least it’s the same as other staples in my rotation such as Bell’s Two Hearted, or Odells and cheaper per ounce than Stone IPA or Surly Furious.

Bomber. Aroma is piney, grapefruity, catty, floral. Pours hazy cantaloupe with a thick off-white head with great retention; leaves constellation-like patterns of lace. Taste is beautifully citrusy and peachy, starting sweet before finishing with a lingering bitterness. Carbonation is fine, medium to full body. Excellent. Much better than Big Eye!
