San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap. A lightly hazy dark golden beer with a reddish hue. A finger thick white head leaves curtains. The aroma is certainly peachy, with pine cones and a little malty touch. Some sweetness in the flavor, well balanced by the bitterness. The bitterness wins... peaches and pine cones too. Full body, soft carbonation, slightly warming. Bitter and fruity finish. Quite lovely this one. 130808

12oz bottle and on tap. Poured a golden orange honey color with thick foamy white head that retains well. Aroma is a mixture of citrus, mild sweet malt, and floral hop notes. Taste is like eating a grapefruit with a slight grassy bitterness followed by semi sweet malt profile. The alcohol is well masked in the flavors with a crisp mouthfeel and medium to light body. Carbonation is nicely balanced, while retaining a creamy feel. Great IPA.

12oz bottle pour. Light golden orange with about a finger of sudsy head. Citrus aroma. Taste of grassy and citrus hops with a solid malt presence. Pretty decent amount of bitterness. Killer lacing left behind. This was good.

Aroma is citrusy hops, pine, a bit of malt, and musty mango. A taste reveals bright mango rather than musty, and lots of clear, strong notes of the other elements on the nose. Lots of cleanly bitter hops keep this nicely drinkable, although the caramel malt backbone (which is an appreciated note, generally speaking) does feel a bit sticky on the finish. Overall, a super tasty hop-extravaganza that will surely keep me coming back.

Thick off white head. Mostly clear golden amber pour. Big aromas. Tons of citrus, grapefruit, apricot, peach, and some pine. Flavor is also very full flavored. Peach, mango, grapefruit, lemon, and some pine. A slight caramel malt backbone as well. ---Rated via iPhone

Hkrivera (153) - Guaynabo, PUERTO RICO - AUG 1, 2013
One of the best beer around in the IPA category. You will feel the sting of the Sculpin on the first shot. Strong hops flavor, go best with seafood and sushi. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
