San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

This is an exceptional beer. I can’t understand how anyone could say that this IPA is overrated. There is a strong hops flavor with only a hint of bitterness. There is also a pleasant fruitiness that lingers on the palate. On a hot summer day this IPA really hits the spot. Hats off to the brewers of this outstanding example of an American IPA.

Tried this with 3 other people. All over the board. One loved it, one hated it and two of us in the middle. Smells and tastes like a citrus bomb with a little bitterness. Surprisingly easy to drink.

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA is overrated. Not much aroma or interesting hop notes. Medium bitterness so is drinkable. Sculpin just doesn’t live up to the hype.

Draught. All time favorite IPA. Crisp, juicy and good bitterness. Perfect summer quencher.

Wow. This IPA has a very strong citrus grapefruit taste. I wasn’t able to notice all the subtle flavors because of this, but it was still a good brew. I think I may stick to their big eye for now though.

Clear golden copper. Smells of light sweet hops. Tastes warm light hops, a definite citrus rind bite to these hops. Leaves a bit of that citrus bite sticky on your palate in the after taste.

Pours a nice amber. Aroma is lots of fruit: mango, lychee, peach, apricot. Some grass & hay and pine as well. Taste: yeah! Mango, kiwi, orange, peach, some dew grass. Insanely well balanced!! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
