San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2014 Bomber from Safeway poured into a tulip. Cloudy, golden with a thin head. Smells fresh, light, tropical fruits, light hoppiness. Taste starts sweet, but moves to grassy, herbal, mellow but up front hops and ends with a very dry finish. Medium body, perfect carbonation, easy to drink. That said, Im underwhelmed due to the ratings and the price ($8 a bomber on sale!). This is a great starter into the IPAs for the uninitiated. 10.12.13 update - still feel exactly the same as above. Smells great, but tastes above average but just not worth the price ($9 bomber this time). 11.24.14 Update: Tried a fresh 6 pack that was delivered to Rajas this week. Still feel the same - maybe even a little overrated. It has a bitter finish when compared to Pliny the Elder and Lagunitas beers (which I also had tonight). Not that its bad - its just the most expensive ($14/6 pack on sale) and its not quite the best. Prefer the sweetness of Lagunitas or the lack of any bitter aftertaste of Pliny or the smoothness of Alesmith or Alpine to this one.

Very pretty foamy 2 inch head leaves great lace for the entire glass.. the brew is a slightly hop hazed tangerine orange.. The nose is honestly pretty astounding... like a fruity citrus juice concoction.. lemons.. limes.. melon... yummy. Wow! Tangerine and tropical fruit hoppiness from front to back on this one.. only enough pale malts to deliver the hoppy goodness .. finish reminds me of grapefruit zest.. Body is on the lighter side for the style.. but it adds nicely to the overall package.. sorta dry too.. and I appreciate it.. dangerously drinkable.. But at $7.50/bomber, it isnt going to happen too often.

Pour is a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma is a nice citrus hop presence. Flavor is much the same but with more intense citrus blast with maybe some honeydew and cantaloupe. Very little to no malt presence, this thing is all about the hops.

Bottle. Amazingly underwhelmed by this. Dont have anything meaningful to add to the 1000+ ratings of this one already -- golden color, citrus and pine in aroma, bitter finish, blah blah -- nothing that stands out at all from any other decent IPA Ive had. Dont have anything bad to say about it, just remarkable how dull it is. I should probably try this again and rerate, but Im in no hurry to.

Poured from a bottle. Clear golden orange with foamy white head and some nice lacing. Fantastic aroma - citrus, pine and tropical fruit. Taste is bitter throughout with some sweetness opening up in the middle followed by a bitter dry finish that lingers and lingers. Very nicely balanced. Really enjoyed this beer, only thing that didnt suit my taste was the heavy dryness. Mouthfeel was moderate with crisp carbonation. An excellent IPA.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2015 Pretty much the perfect IPA, plus its always readily available. Sturdy enough malt backbone that lets bright apricot and citrus shine.

Nicely carbonated and clear golden in color. The aroma is of citrus, hops, and lite sweet malts. A simple, balanced, and perfect IPA. The flavor matches the aroma. The finish has a mild bitterness that is very pleasant. It doesnt linger either. Overall this is an excellent beverage to try.

May 2012. 22. oz. bottle. A masterpiece of an IPA. So balanced and well made and close to perfection. Only a few others can stand up to this one. Pine, citrus, hops, tropical fruit, its all there.

Bomber from Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont (love that place!). Pours clear golden with goodly white, foamy head. Aroma of malty fermenting beer/slight alcohol, pine and slight background orange. Flavor, carried by a medium body, comes on softly and well-balanced. This is one of the most well-balanced, well-behaved and well-roundedly delicious IPA?s in my experience. It?s a crime beer like this isn?t more available on the East Coast. I would be drinking this every week if i could find it, and I?ve been looking for weeks now!
